Any Sly Brothers from Oregon out there???
« on: April 21, 2008, 09:20:48 PM »
Just wondering. I am considering a couple of job opportunities that I have received, and was wondering if anyone could share a little about life in Oregon? I'm from New York city, which I would assume is a lot different. The fast pace of New York City life is really getting to me, and I am looking to move out West. I received a couple of job opportunities in Oregon, but I do not know the first thing about what life in Oregon would be like, particularly in the Portland area. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Dude if it's actually in the city ...awesome...

It is really a great, very hip, clean city, with a ton to do...me and the wife love it and so do most that visit...

now once you're out of the city, it's still very cool and a great place...but NOT NYC bro...great pocket mini cities though outside the main downtown...

Great place...but can be a bit gloomy at times, especially this year..

I'm a new guy to living here ( I live in the bastard child "Vancouver" over the river)...but have had family up here for 20 years with lots of visits...its a cool town!

Oh....btw it is a much more laid back vibe that is for sure O0

Portland is an awesome city.  ShineHead (aka Vash) is currently living there.

Ditto to everything BA has said.

My two cents worth. You'll love Portland!

Portland has often been called the big city with the small town feel. Its mild weather, breathtaking scenery, exciting location and friendly people have all contributed to its appearance on numerous “Best Of” lists, including Online Insider’s “Top 10 Least Expensive Cities”, Money Magazine’s “Top 10 Places to Vacation” and “Top 10 Best Places to Live”, and American Style Magazine’s “Top 25 Arts Destinations”.

Nestled between the beautiful Coast Range on the west and the spectacular Cascade Range on the east, Portland sits at the junction of the Columbia and Willamette rivers. From downtown Portland, it’s just a 90 minute drive to the scenic Oregon coast, an hour-and-a-half to Mt. Hood and some of the best skiing in the country, a half-an-hour to the peaceful vineyards and farms of the fertile Willamette Valley, and less than three hours to a Mariner’s game in Seattle where you can catch you beloved Yankees when they are in town.  O0

Portland is a great city.

Lots to do. Lots of good music and a real open minded community.

I am just North in Seattle.

Bludger44, since you're from NYC you'll enjoy Schnitzer Concert Hall, a blast from the past!  O0
It's not at all like Lincoln Center's complex of boxed buildings. It's a restored 1920's movie palace like your RKO Keith's or Loew's King's or Paramount. Except those places have been uninhabited for decades.

Yep!   >:D

Dude...I just forgot you live in Portland.  I was thinking you lived in a different area of Oregon, like Klamath Falls or something...LOL  Just kidding bro!  I didn't know where you lived in OR, so I didn't want to go claiming you lived in Portland.

This is all great stuff, guys. Keep it coming!

I'm glad to hear its an open-minded community. That's more my style. I'm from a diverse background myself, so that is always good to hear.

How's the cost of living out there?

You poking fun at Klamath Falls?  >:( The Lovely Mrs. Schro & I have a piece of land there right off of Klamath Lake we may retire to.
As much as I love where we are in NorCal, I've always loved Oregon. Growing up, we'd vacation there every year in the Rogue Valley (dad grew up there). If I could find work up there with a comparable salary, the UHaul would be packed the next day.

If I didn't live in Seattle, I would live in Portland.  I have relatives in the Portland area, so I get to visit and have become somewhat familiar with it.  It is a very people scaled city.  Downtown is very walkable.  Also the MAX light rail system is great.  Portland is also home of the Pacific Northwest's soon to be only NBA team since the Oklahoma City Sooner Sonics are about to leave Seattle.   Seriously, Portland has a lot going for it in my opinion!

I have visited Portland 3 times. Being a skateboarder for close to 13 years, my favorite place in the city is the famed Burnside Skatepark underneath the Burnside Bridge near the Williamette. I witnessed many a sick skating session there over the years. The locals there were pretty territorial but if you introduced yourself and respected them, they had no problem sharing the jewel that they had there.

I know you do Schro.  Actually, I've always poked fun at Klamath because it was a town I used to play in baseball.  Though, it's fricken gorgeous up there and I had some great times playing baseball up there.

Very nice dude! Funny ...keep things open...life may get to crazy for nothin' down there and you'll find a way to make due with a less comparable salary! ;)

I speak from experience bro!
