I'm a BMX rider myself. Hopefully there are some good trails and dirt jumps out in Portland.
There are more than just "some" good trails and dirt jumps in Portland and it's immediate environs.

I live in Oregon, currently NE Oregon but I lived in Portland/Clackamas,  thats where I grew up.  I moved from there because it was getting too dang crowded.  What I like about Portland,  downtown specifically is it is very clean compared to other cities.  As I get older I find I like less populated areas.  Every time we need to go to the doctor or something we make a trip to Portland,  which is 240 miles from us and as I come into town on I-84 and get to drive in the traffic I remember why I moved.  Great light rail system though .. rode it for years.  Now they have AC in the train cars so if you get stuck jammed between two profusely sweating fat people it is tolerable!

Where in NY?
Did you live near Kissena or Alley Pond Parks. There's a little used path nearby that was once part of the Vanderbuilt Motor Parkway. I have friends that say they ride there.

I'm way late on this thread, but I say go for it bludger!
It sounds like your ready for a change and all the advice from the guys is positive. We moved out of NY last year and we haven't looked back. I too was looking for a more comfortable life, with more space and a lower cost of living. My former borough (SI) was getting too crowded (overbuilt, overpopulated) and real estate was just ridiculous.
Anyway, coming out here was one of the best things we've done. I have a home now with a square footage and lot I could never have touched back East. Not a Mcmansion, mind you, I never wanted one anyway, But a comfortable one level, split floor plan with open layout, high ceilings and arched entries, nice touches and three car garage.
I encourage you to go for it, you will not regret it, and for sure you'll have much more opportunity to pursue the outdoor activities which you have been missing.

Good luck and keep us posted!    O0

Schroman, I agree with BA, you may want to think about that, especially with housing being in your favor. Sometimes you just gotta go for it. It sounds like a place you really love bro. Why wait?

I'm in the process of applying to grad school in PDX, and we travel back and forth between North Idaho + PDX regularly.  We're expecting to move there in 2-3 years.  I'm psyched about that!
