Feeling lost to this
« on: May 27, 2013, 09:22:19 AM »
So I started the every other day shaving. I am using the HB head slick As my shaving cream for this. But now I seam to be taking chunks out of the back of my head and the razor burn almost seems like it is worse.  I really like the look but the bumps and cuts are makeing feel like it is less for me.  I am going to try a different blade for the HB I like the setup of it and the idea of how it works but using the three right bow just seems to not be working for me.
I am looking for some good aftershave this is the nost shaving I have ever done working my line I only shave once every three days but was trying to do this once a day. And was never much into anything other than some cheap aftershave didn'tgrow up knowing much about shaving other than how. So alot of what everyone tells me on here is kinda Greek to me. But am really trying to figure it out

Let it heal before resuming shaving. Try the ATX instead of the sport.
Don't make against the grain passes until you've perfected your technique. If you're using the sport then remember no pressure is to be put on the blade.

Bearmedic, I would let that heal before trying to shave again...I know you don't like peach fuzz, but I think it may be worth it for you in the long run (I can't shave everyday either). But I have worked it to where I can keep my head smooth enough to shave every second or third day. Here are some things you may want to invest in to improve/perfect your shave:

1. Witch Hazel (nice alternative to aftershave, helps heal the skin without the burning sensation)
2. Bump Patrol/Bump Stopper (keeps head clear of bumps)
3. St. Ives Apricot Scrub or Neutrogena Blackhead clearer. (Are you washing the dead skin and dirt off of your scalp before shaving?). If not shaving over a dirty scalp can cause you to break out just like I saw in your picture. You only need a small amount to massage into your hand and over your scalp. Let the exfoliant sit a few minutes then wash off. You can do this either before or after you shave your head.
4. A Shaving Brush. When you apply your shave soap/lather with a brush it makes the hair stand up better.
5. Shave Secret. Mix 4-6 drops of it in something with your Headslick and it makes for a nicer lather and a smoother shave.

To add to this: Are you washing your bedwear often enough? A lot of times sweat from a bald head can fall on the pillow causing dirt and the dirt can spread onto your pores. At the very least, you could wear a skull cap (stocking cap) to bed.

Maybe for the time being, you could use a more traditional razor until you get the hang of the HeadBlade. Also, have you tried shaving while in the shower?

If you need any more tips or advice, feel free to PM me or one of the other guys. Good luck, man and hang in there!

P.S. Try rubbing an ice cube over your head after shaving. Aloe Vera and/or cortisone cream will help those breakouts on the back of your head heal faster. You may want to shave with the grain for now in the back also

Once all that heals up, I'd ditch the HB and try a regular razor to see if it makes a difference. The HB is tricky and I never got the hang of it.

Your scalp will heal many times faster than other areas on your body. Shouldn't take too long. I have some of the same issues, and generally it'll take of itself after just a few days break from shaving. I'll second the witch hazel. I use it too, and it is good stuff. If I have a serious breakout or cut I still put the witch hazel on, even on the odd day that I don't shave. It really helps to heal things up.

Also, trying a different razor may help as well. I was really into the HeadBlade, but had some of these kinds of problems with it. Now I shave with the Schick Hydro 5 and it's a lot easier on my noggin, and gets even closer than the HeadBlade did.

SlySirHarry whoa that is some great advice, I read one line and thought "yes that is good" then you hit us with another and another and another. great advice for anyone

About all I could add bearmedic, is that I began head shaving for the first time with an ATX and i have found it really easy for a beginner like me, so get an ATX and try that. I have also compared it recently to using a stick shaver and it's still definitely easier

Also if you get breakouts, try using an antibacterial wash in the shower straight after shaving and pat your head dry with a clean towel, then keep your paws off it!
That and taking SlySirHarry's witch hazel and fresh bed linen advice cleared my problems up :)

I make my own aftershave. I start with a bottle of Witch Hazel, I add Aloe gel until it starts to thicken just a little bit, then I add Tea Tree Oil just until I can smell it when I open the bottle. The witch hazel is an astringent that slows blood loss just a bit, the aloe is a healing agent for the skin, and the tea tree oil is nature's antibiotic; it is a germ killer and getting rid of those germs on the scalp is part of the key to healing.
I used to be a HeadBlade aficionado but I had to stop using it a couple of years ago. I began taking massive chunks out of my scalp and I used it just as I had always done. The only thing I could think of was that the blade design had been somehow changed. I had been using a Personna M5 Magnum on my face and I started using that on the dome with less blood loss.
One of the things I have done after chopping my scalp is switch to an electric while the healing is in progress. I have a Panasonic Linear (8245K) that I've used with great success for several years. Sometimes a week or 2 away from sharp objects is just what the doctor ordered. Many people are purists with regard to this topic,if they shave with blades THEY SHAVE WITH BLADES. I try to be flexible in this regard and give myself a break when needed.

Thanks, crowbar! One of the great things about this site is that we all can learn from each other, and it's always good to give suggestions in addition to the ones that work for you, as what works for member A won't necessarily work for member B, member C, etc. I'm a pay-it-forward kind of guy, many of the members here taught me some tricks that I never knew, and so I relish the chance to share with other head shaving newcomers. Here's to better and safer head shaves for all of us!

Are you shaving with the grain, or against it?  I tried shaving against the grain at first and the back of my head would look like that every time.

You may need to give your scalp some time to toughen up.  I couldn't shave against the grain for about 3 months, and to this day I still shave with it unless I'm going to the club or somwhere where head rubs will be immenant.

Thanks everyone. Yeah I have been shaving against the grain. I will try going with the grain.
So making your own after shave is something I never thought about. What do you make it in and store it.
Thanks everyone for all the advice

I make it in a 2 cup glass measuring cup. The witch hazel comes in 16 oz (2 cup) bottles but there is always about 1/2 cup of space at the top of the cup, plenty of room for what I mix in. After everything is mixed I just pour it right back into the WH bottle. I usually don't have to waste much because they never fill the bottles to the top anyway. Just use a spoon to mix all the ingredients before you pour it and remember to shake before use.

The bottle.....shake the bottle.

On my part, the sides of my head are very sensitive ; the best way I found was to shave from front to rear (taking the hair from its "side"). Only THEN, I shave the remaining hair against the grain (from bottom to top). This allows a much smoother shaving on sensitive areas. You can try the same on the back of your head.
