Favorite country is Switzerland. I could live in Montreux (home of Charlie Chaplin).

I didn't even have to think twice on this one. Ireland all the way. In fact I have been investigating purchasing a home in the west of Ireland where I could spend the winter months once I retire.
Definitely Ireland. Not so sure I'd want to spend the winters there, though. But I suppose it beats all the snow you get out in Illinois.

Two countries I haven't been to that I would love to visit are Ireland and Greece. Places that I have been to and might enjoy living for a while are the UK and Italy.
But I love the good old USA and certainly see this as my permanent home.

I'm not sure what country it is. Bora Bora? Tahiti?
It's where they have those really nice vacation cottages built on stilts out in the harbor. Clear blue water, warm all the time. I would live there.

Despite what's happening now, I'd have a hard time leaving the USA. However if I had to, the Lovely Mrs. Schro & I cruised around Spain for two weeks before we had kids. Both of us fell in love with the country. The people, the pace of life, the weather, the food & wine. We especially loved Marbella on the southern coast (in Andalucia).

There are a number of countries that I'd like to visit, but for home I can't think of anywhere but the good ol' U S of A -- especially now that we have an administration that's not a complete embarrassment*.
* It says a lot when hammerdrill and I can have completely different opinions of our leadership and yet respect each other's opinions and the right and freedom to have them, and even be friends (even if just on an Internet forum). That's what makes this country great.

Agreed, BB (though you shouldn't be so hard on the Clintons

)

LOL! A lot of people in this country seem to have lost the ability to have polite political discussions, or even find the humor in it. It's nice that this group seems to rise above that fray!

Thanks BB. While I have serious significant doubts about Obamas presidency, mainly his trend toward socialism and the plans of over-taxation of those who actually create jobs in this country, I appreciate you respecting my views as I do yours. You are right ..no..RIGHT..about respecting each others opinions. One of the administrators informed me recently that one of our more liberal members took issue about something I said on another thread about Obama. Maybe I was a bit overboard on what I said but unfortunately this person did not have the GUTS to PM me personally and tell me why they thought I was wrong. But as you said..that is what makes America great. It is possible to agree to disagree without being disagreeable.

As many of you friends said it is difficult for one to leave the country he/she has grown up. Especially it's hard to get accustomed to the culture of a foreign country. I have been to many cities including Amsterdam, Köln, Paris, Brussels, Brugges, Barcelona, Monaco, Nice, Cannes, Florence, Rome, Milan, Athens, Thessaloniki (the birthplace of our leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk), etc. but Istanbul is kind of different. In Istanbul you can see an unlicenced shanty and a luxurious residence with Porsches, Ferraris, Mercedes' parked in front of it, on the same street. The city really tells you many different stories from different cultures such as Byzantine and Ottoman Empire. With about 15 million people living in it, Istanbul is a city of contrasts, hosting both the richest and the poorest, the revolutionary and the conservative, the black and white together. I'm not telling these to praise my country. For instance Ankara (the city I live in is one of the most boring cities available on earth as there are only governmental buildings and shopping malls (no sea, no natural beauties, no attractions etc.) There are just some old ruins left from the Hittites, and the Roman Empire. But as I friend I can really recommend you to come and pay a visit to Istanbul if you ever have a chance. I ensure you satisfaction and great memoirs. I'd like to finish with some photos of Istanbul, some of them from the objective of the maestro Ara Güler, showing scenes from the old Istanbul days. Here's the city encompassing two continents. Best wishes..

Sorry for the long post. Thank you for reading

I really like South Africa. I had a chance to move there when I finished grad school, but I decided to stay here and start and engineering career. My wife loves Latin America, and we've talked recently about moving to Ecuador or Guatemala for 6 months - 1 year. But right now we're concerned about getting jobs when we come back, so that idea is on hold.

Definitely Austria, especially Salzburg. After that, Bavaria (the Allgaeu) or the UK, especially Edinburgh, Scotland. The economy being what it is, we can only dream for now. All best, Professor Melon
