Andrew, if you the original home owner comes back to you, you should offer less money citing the extra amount you had to spend in the hotel.
While that is the logical thing to do, this guy owes as much as his house is worth, so anything less puts him upside down. We have been willing to pay the same price agreed upon 3 months ago because we loved the house. But, now that we've found another house, this guy will try to sell to another family and find out very quickly that nobody will give him enough to break even.

Well guys .... my dramatic house buying story may actually come to an end in the near future. We struck a deal on the house we saw last night and couldn't be happier. The sellers are in trouble (for reasons unknown) and came way down on their asking price, at least partly because of our ability to make this happen quickly.
Meanwhile, I'm not going to bother calling the prior sellers, who screwed us over, and let them continue to think we're living in the marriot waiting for them to get a mortgage (which won't happen).
Along the way, so many people said "everything happens for a reason", and I believe that now. The new house is a much better deal and closer to our dream house than the prior one.
Thanks for all the support ...

IRONHORSE...just dont kick the beer bottles over ok...
Andrew, like it has been said before- Good things come to those who wait. You never know, the original house may have had some secret problems. Give it time and all these days you have stayed at the mariott will be funny to reflect on. Imagine the stories your kids will have to tell their kids. Things will work out. Glad you stuck thru it all and didnt give up. Your reward is coming soon. Good Luck

Thanks again guys ....
I just started the mortgage app process over again and it's nothing like before (even a few months ago). With the mortgage and financial crisis happening, it's a new world, and banks are being extra extra careful now, as they should. But, it means more red tape and paperwork for the applicants.
We really stretched our limits for this house, but we're getting a great deal on it, so I'm hoping it will be worth the stretch.

Down the Home Stretch
Our closing is scheduled for 1 week from tomorrow (11/14). Everything is going smoothly this time and we're expecting to finally have a home of our own again soon. I have to say, though, the people in the Marriot have been great. They've become our extended family and we'll likely come back to visit occassionally.
Interestingly, this thread has become my journal of the crazy ride we've taken in this journey to a new home.

Quick Update:
We closed on our new house today. The place is everything we expected and more. But, everything is completely chaotic at this point. Movers moved our stuff in but we've not unpacked anything yet. We're sleeping at the hotel one last night and moving out of here first thing in the morning.
Back to work ...
