So I was about at the end of my shift this morning, when I go to deal with this guy in a car with another officer.
The other officer is new, but he's got maybe 10 years on my and looks it. We go up to the drivers side window, and here is this businessman on his cellphone. My co-worker asks him to get off the phone and the guy had the nerve to glance up and hold up his hand! I get right pissed and from where I am at the front of the car and quite loudly tell him to shut the phone off. He looks up at me and starts to casually tell the person he's talking to that he's got to go and that he'll call back and continues the 'goodbye' process for almost 30 seconds before I almost flat out yell 'TURN OFF THE PHONE NOW!' At that point he snaps it shut in mid sentence but goves me this look of 'what's your problem?'
This happens all the time, and worst is when we go up to people and they are stuffing their face with food. I don't know what the hell it is with some people and why so many have such an absolute lack of respect.

fortin: sorry hear 2 about how your shift ended like that. i'm not a police officer but i can only imagine hearing more similar stories like that. U must have an increbible ability 2 "diffuse" your anger towards these knuckleheads. i deal with the general public in my line of work, also and have run across several rude idiots as well. sometimes.... it's best 2 remain "silent" & handle the situation professionally. so... what happened? did U arrest this idiot or gave him a warning?

And the bad part Fortin is there is an entire generation coming up that acts the same way. Cell phones are not al to be used in our high school from the time the students come in until the final bell. Kids will boldly walk down the hall talking or texting and when you tell them to get off and give you the phone they pull the same routine that you endured this morning. Then the kids get beligerent about your taking the phone and giving it to the deans. BTW have you noticed as a law enforcement officer that people on phones are causing more accidents or road rage from other drivers because the phone user isn't paying attention to their driving?

Hi Fortin,
This same thing happened on an episode of "Cops" the other night. Amazing that this woman had the gall to sit there and chat on the phone while the officers stood there. And this was a serious issue, not just a speeding ticket.
They had to take the phone away and physically take her out of the vehicle.Thats how bad it was.
This generation and their electronic lifestyle irritate me something fierce. The cell phone has been a positive in some ways but so negative in others. An item that should bring people closer actually puts them farther apart.
Take me back to 1930 when this country was self sufficient (nothing from China but tea) and people had a togetherness that we don't see much anymore (except on the Sly forum! )

Well, it happens on a regular basis, but rarely so blatantly rude and ignorant as that guy. I don't know what it is, cause as I see by your responses that you are the same as how I was raised, to always respect those others in authority. What I am liking is the new cell phone laws. Ontario doesn't have it yet, but Quebec does and it's that you simply can't use your phone while driving at all.

We used to call that "failing the attitude test". It always had it's own special consequences in my decision making process!

Same here, I wonder how many will fail the test tonight, but on that note, I've got to run otherwise I'll end up being here all night.

Fortin, the right thing to do was to pull the son of a bitch out of the car and shove the cell phone up his ass

Dont shoot me here, but, Ya know I could almost seeing a woman doing that but a man? Come on, what in your life or converstation that was so important that you could say hey man, im getting pulled over I gotta go. Maybe he thought if you seen he was an important business man you would be easier on him. My cousin is a police officer and he was telling me a few weeks ago this lady was all over the road talking on her cell phone. He pulls her over and you guessed it...she didnt hang up either. You know what she said to him? She told him here...take this..its my business card, Im late for a meeting so you can contact me thru my cell phone. She puts the car in drive and starts to take off. He laughs ...says well now she isnt going to be going to any meeting. He arrested her for fleeing a police officer. Once he got back into the car...he looked at her business card and guess what it was for. LOL....She worked for the BMV....she actually trains the people at the BMV offices lol

I think, in the Academy, they give a short course on "Attitude Adjustments".
