I think, in the Academy, they give a short course on "Attitude Adjustments".
Unfortunately not ours, it's more law, policies and procedures, but it's something you pick up on fast, also something I'm just naturally good at. I had this one guy one time try and pull a racial card on me, he was about 6'8" and about 300 to 340lb and looked like he'd have killed me in one hit. I tore into him for a good 2 minutes and with each passing second he seemed to shrink an inch. After all was said and done he thanked me and insisted on shaking my hand!
Not that this guy wasn't a dumbass, but looking at the bigger picture. I think part of this too is that North American society, because of the media, has really lost respect for, and demonized the police as corrupt or violent or bad or etc etc etc
The general public has lost respect for the police because of bullsh*t, biased and yellow journalism. There is a story every week or so where a cop is arrested, tried, and convicted in the media before there are even any facts available!!! (although the same happens to suspects too in our f'd up society) Then to compound the situation the police higher ups are more concerned with media spin than with defending their brothers.
Fortin, I really respect you for doing the job in such a sh*tty environment.
Are you OPP?
Unfortunately, that type of behavior can be used by a person of evil intent to distract an officer. If the officer becomes fixated on the cell phone issue, he may not notice a concealed weapon being brought into play until it is too late.
I worry about such things. My son is one of those people on the street.

Your son and all the rest of us in all law enforcement fields definitely do appreciate your concern. I know my parents worry, more so my mother as my father was RMCP, although they both know that if something were to happen, that it's ok, cause I'm doing what I love and helping others.
Yeah, which is why one of the first things we learn is to be always watching, and not only the subject (hands, facial expressions, body language) but also the peripheral and what's going on around, is the person distracting you to get you focussed on him to get your eyes off the real crime.
That's something that is drilled so hard into us that it's completely subconscious to the point where my friends laugh at me, cause we'll go out somewhere, to a mall, bar, pub, whatever, and they say I always look as though I'm not paying attention cause of how my eyes are darting all over the place looking at everything and everyone. It gets me in quite a bit of trouble when I'm out with women cause they always think I'm checking out another girl
