Always wanted to try Absinthe, the real stuff though, not the make it at home crap. Suppose to produce a weird buzz, different from normal drunkeness.
Dan, this is because true Absinthe contains wormwood which allegedley has some pychedelic properties.
Yeah, it's distilled wormwood extract mixed with melissa and other herbs. Thujone is the active ingredient. Which, what I think is stupid is it's illegal to distribute, but yet fresh sage can have up to 50% of that chemical in it, Stonge absinthe only has I think 12-20%. What I've been told is that the psychedelic properties haven't been proven, but it is a stimulant, so mixed with alcohol the 2 substances clash and produce the "weird feeling". There was a book out awhile ago called "legal highs". All kindas stuff you can get messed up on from the grocery store. Eating or juicing a butt load of parsley is suppose to give you a buzz. Another one is smokin banana peels. I tried that one years ago. Didn't do crap for me though.

You're in luck, it's being made again but it's pricey, $55 a bottle, then you need an Absinthe spoon, and even an Absinthe fountain--it holds ice & water, let the cold water pour over a sugar cube on the spoon and into a glass. I bought a bottle, and received a spoon for Christmas, I'll be trying it soon. I've heard they're selling a lot of it in the French Quarter. Las Touristas are willing to foot the bill, we natives are too cheap.

Go on The Fine Living Network. They have a series call "The Thirsty Traveler". The host travels the world and samples liquors & beers from around the world. One episode was dedicated to Absinthe. Interesting........

don't drink much but I'd say Amaretto Disaronno on the rox (ok, I know it's kinda girly) used to be Gran Ma on the rox but I have mellowed in my old age.

So you can actually buy it locally? (and legally) with out having to order it from over seas? I'd shell out that much if I founds some around here.

Thanks for the info, I'll have to start actively looking for it. Licorice might be one of the herbs used in the distilling process along with the wormwood and melissa. The herbal blend is what's supposed to give it it's greenish hue. It's nickname is the "green fairy" or "green Devil". I've read alot of Huxley's work, I've always wanted to try Peyote once due to the way he described it's effect. Maybe when I'm in the nursing home and have nothing to lose I'll take one last trip.

I have drank Absinthe overseas before and it tastes like doo-doo and I dont think I drank enough of it to "feel" anything. Keep in mind that real Absinthe is really high proof strong alcohol.
