Most of my friends don't care and most of them like it. Ironically, my parents were both hippies. I had long hair down to my chin until I was 7. Ever since I have been able to decide my haircuts, I have always had a military haircut. Even then, my parents would ask why I kept my hair so sort. I am BBC - I have a full head of hair. They really don't get why I shave my head completely bald. Our family is the one who installed our hot buttons. They definitely know how to push them. I have realized, it isn't about me. It is about them.

In my case, I got more flack when I had a design shaved into my head than I did when I shaved my head...My family would look at the crazy designs and go "what the hell??". Actually they may have been more relieved when I started shaving my head. That's the only thing I miss about having hair, but I'm at the age now where I shouldn't turn my head into a canvas anyway especially at the job site...

To which I would respond:" Yes, I am an adult person, and thus I can wear my hair and clothing as I see appropriate, and do not need the "advice" of family members."

I hate to say it but it's the potential reactions to going sly that have kept me from doing it, so far. When I had my hair taken from a faux hawk to a # 1.5 buzz, people went NUTS with negative comments.

Tell the family that you shaved your head in preparation for getting it tattooed. Then ask them what tattoo they think would look better on your head; Rolling Stones Lips, the ZZ Top logo or a portrait of Lady Ga Ga?

Well, a faux hawk isn't what I would call a generally accepted style in the business world, but a 1.5 buzz is--what kind of people are you hanging with? And remember the only opinion that really counts is that of the guy who deals with it 24/7, everything else is just gossip and potentially envy. -

I shaved my head only two times, both my family had very bad reactions. My parents hates it.

I've never been sly but I shave to 0.5 every week, been doin that on and off for over 3 years now. My girlfriend is used to it and said she would sooner see me confident with a 0.5 cut that balding and nervous.
My parents are the biggest problem, they were teenagers in the 60s when long hair was rebelious.
They hate my 0.5 which makes me sad because I KNOW one day I'll go sly... -

No problem , never has been I am accepted for who I am . I luv it shaved , bald and shiny and it gets done daily regularly .My Mother does not dislike it at all . But there again my other half also has the same haircut .

I did shave my head just to get it tattooed. I wanted the tattoo to be a surprise so I told everyone I was just curious how I would look and feel with a shaved head, but they all figured out my plan, which was not hard since all my skin below my neck was already tattooed.
My opinion now is than the scalp is a perfect place for a tattoo! -

My father did a double-take when he saw me but didn't say anything right then. Later he just asked if it was for work reasons (I was starting an assignment at a oil refinery and have to wear a lot of protective gear during the day.
I warned my mother ahead of time so there was no shock there, she liked it and funny thing had already told my grandmother about it while I was performing the operation in the bathroom so when I came out the news was already spreading.
My sister liked it, only complained that I should have done it for charity but I told her that a) I couldn't find any events going on that weekend and b) I didn't want to treat it like some personal publicity stunt by doing it in public. This was a private thing and I wanted to do it myself.
One aunt was upset about it but I don't think she was aware that I had been going bald for years now. Why did she think I was always wearing a hat?
Some friends were cracking jokes, a few didn't say anything but from the initial look I could tell they were shocked by it. One guy who shaves because he's also balding was pretty much like "welcome, brother!"
The reaction from the young girls has been mostly positive, which is what matters more than most.

One way you could get others adjusted to your new bald look is to update any internet profile pictures you have. Within a week of going sly, I updated Skype, LinkedIn, Google mail and Facebook.
By the time friends and family saw me, they'd seen my new profile beforehand.
