I am a technical rep for for semiconductor equipment. It's a cool job and it pays well but we have lay offs every other months it seems and they make us take vacation (or unpaid time off now.. I ran out of vaca). It sucks big time. Will probably start delivering pizzas or something part-time.

20 years professional graphic artist...now in the process of change...
I'll let you know where I land! ;)

Change because the market's dry, BaldAndre? Or you just ready for a career change.
I was thinking about getting a job with a medical equipment manufacturer. Or, at least get out of the vendor side of my industry (it seems like the customers get treated better...). Kind of hard to find ANY jobs these days though. Realistically, I will probably try to ride out this down turn where I'm at. I survive several lay offs in the last 10 years so who knows?

5yrs law enforcement and loving it!
Luckily for myself, I've got a secure job being in the government, but I see the effects of the economy every day and do feel for everyone affected by it. Best of luck to you all and I hope you all come through it well!

Baldandre,
Your right I may have to. I've seen that the imaging equipment techs get paid pretty well at hospitals. Better than the guys who fix the equipment at least! So, yeah that would require some schooling. Problem is that I don't like school! Bachelors is the highest I went and it took me forever to get it, so I dread even thinking of going back (especially if it's undergrad again). Who knows, I have SOME GI bill money left over, so maybe I will go PT or something....... NAH!! haha.
shdwwlk,
I should have done some type of business degree or MIS/BIS. I went the comp sci route. I do some work in perl, networking and administrative stuff now and again on our equipment; however, for the most part, I don't even apply anything I learned from school at my job. I think if I would have taken some business courses I could have buzz worded my way to management by now heh JK.

Right now I am unemployed but in my 2 summers of working I worked at a dairy which I didnt really like all that well at first but miss it now. Then I worked at the hardware store for the summer after my senior year but got laid off because there wasnt enough work to do, I was the second yard guy. Right now I am looking for a jon that I would like such as anything ag related like dairy work, feed stores, horticulture, that kind of thing.
The bad thing is I didnt graduate high school because I was too busy with shows and work and I had a crazy life at home.

Before I joined the military, I worked at a momandpops hardware store in South Florida. I learned so much from the owner and the co-workers there. The only time I learned MORE about hardware is when I bought a house. Not that I am Mr. Handyman by any means (far from it haha).
You should consider getting a GED or goto night school, Lophura. I'm sure it will open up more doors once you get that out of the way. The job market is so saturated with applicants these days that you may see a lot overqualified applicants pursing jobs. So, you might be competing with applicants with phD's in Diary Science for the "diary work!" LOL. Anyways, the GED may give you an edge over other applicant, who knows?

So...bro, not to give advice you may not want (now I only went to college 2 yrs)...but bro..
get the GED now...do not get it when you're 25 ...employers will almost ask , why? What happened in the 7 years between 18-25....
if you get it now, you can just tell them ...well I was in a different place...
don't wait...get it off the radar..
if you can!

I work in a lingerie shop where I keep inventory on all of the products that come in. Occasionally I will get asked to model some of the latest styles.
During the evening I work in an ice cream shop where we deliver the icecream toyour car on roller skates. Just trying to keep the old times alive.
......ok now that my dream is over, I work as a manager of a floorcovering store and I also work part time in a funeral home. Yes both are very interesting.

Check this out,
Well this is not what >> I << do for a living, but this was made on the equipment I fix for a living:
(https://www.slybaldguys.com/smf/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Ffarm4.static.flickr.com%2F3311%2F3471359861_451dd23026.jpg%3Fv%3D0%2F&hash=b2496539709c3a294efb63a1212827a9153090c4)
I made this with a SEM microscope using a FIB (focused ion beam) to mill the letters. I milled it one line at a time. Once you start overlapping it has a tendency to collapse (it's like digging sand at the beach).
I really messed up the "B." It looks more like another "G." I don't normally "operate" these tools. I just fix them. I just happened to be calibrating the image and got a little carried away!
Each one of the letters is around 2 micron (2 millionths of a meter) in width.

I currently work at a gym as a part time job due to the fact that I'm a full time student. As for my future I would like to be either an FBI or DEA agent. If those fail and I cannot find a good job, US Marines here I come, it's the only way I could convince my mother to let me go.

Very cool. If you choose to be one of the few and the proud, good luck and semper fi. If you can't get into FBI/DEA now, perhaps service in the Marines will give you the edge you need to get in AFTER your enlistment. The Corps is what got me where I am now. If it weren't for the military I would probably still be living with my parents working minimum wage.

How do you like that PBurke? Sounds like it would be a secure job, right? A couple of the FSE's I worked w/ jumped to the oil/gas industry and they both complained that it was a lot of work (I guess they travel a lot more than we do).

When I worked in AIMD they had tech pubs called NAVAIR pubs. You wrote those too? That's really cool! I wish the procedures at my current job were remotely close to the tech pubs in the military...

Balddad - You work off of 21st Street?
Me? I am an IT Director for one of the top 25 IT consulting firms as ranked by the Twin Cities Business Journal. (We are #4). I design and manage networking and telecommunication infrastructures for 16 customers as well as our internal systems and provide support and maintenance for 500 users and 42 servers and any equipment they touch that draws an electrical current. I used to have a team of 5 other people under me, but they have slowly whittled away with the economy. I manage servers and workstations running Windows, Linux and OSX and in my spare time sell my services building Joomla based website design and eCommerce sites. Currently there are only 6 of those.
-
Antimidas, I work in Bloomfield.
BReady, I write mostly Navy and Marin Corps manuals. I haven't written a NAVAIR manual. But that doesn't mean I won't. I get new things I write manuals for all the time. I may not write the whole manual, but due to my technical experience and the different things that I have been exposed to technically in the military, I get the chance to see a lot of different pieces of equipment.

Fellow chemical engineer here, too. I love it, although my current job isn't true chemical engineering. It's process engineering but it's heavily weighed towards mechanical engineering. We are a defense contractor, so the work is really different. Our processes are typically more low volume and hand assembled type products.
My next job will probably get back into more traditional chemical process engineering. I won't like the fact that most of those industries are higher volume and continuous processes (more callouts, weekends, etc.). At my job our plant pretty much shuts down on nights and weekends.

I'm a music teacher and musician. I play clarinet and viola.
I teach private clarinet lessons and just started teaching violin also. I also play for $$ when there are jobs available, although that's inconsistent and seasonal (holiday stuff, musicals in the summer, etc).
I have a degree in sociology/anthropology which is pretty much useless from a job standpoint (at least with just a bachelor's), so this year I'm going to get an alternative teacher's certification to teach elementary music or JH orchestra/band (no HS band, no marching band for me...).
I was in law school for a year, but I didn't like it at all! It was a good experience though because it made me realize that I really love teaching music.

About 10 years ago I hired a guy from Canada who had lost all hair on his body (all -- including eyelashes) to a childhood illness (I forget which, Scarlet Fever perhaps?).
At the time, I was still guardless-buzzing and coveted his completely smooth (and very shiny) scalp.

High fever can definitely cause that.

Thank you all for your hairless support!!!
It was all my hair for about 3 years eyebrows, lashes, even inside my nose!!!

Body hair is still 99% gone
Head hair, if I let it comes out in a few patches……..

I love to read about what all you guys are doing, and feel for those that have lost their jobs and are finding it hard to get another. My wife and I run a small photographic businss but we are more than semi-retired. We do photographic projects and also wide format printing from our home. We did have a Kodak lab but ended up having to close it before it wiped us out financially. We reckoned it was better to loose what money we had in the business than our home and sanity.
I hope those looking for jobs find success very soon. It's not just about money but also self esteem and confidence.

I know what you mean... Sanity; self esteem & confidence. These are major issues to me. My dad just says that I have to move on. But he was never in business and had to walk a mile in my shoes... Its tough, but yes, we go on.
Good luck to you as well

On the side I am keeping my hand in the Health & Fitness field by leading a boot camp and developing a kettelbell class for the outdoors/summertime.

My first career out of high school was a hairstylist. I went to school and got my cosmotology license and worked as a hairstylist and barber for many years. My dad was a barber and had two shops. He had a shop in Staten Island, New York and a fancier place in New York City (more of a unisex salon).
After my dad passed away from cancer at 52, I left the business. I enjoyed the work, but never liked the fact it was feast or famine. Being a cash business during the slow times, you had to struggle to pay the bills. I also never liked the fact that there were no benefits in this business. No paid vacations, no 401K or no Health insurance.
My mom who was a legal secretary told me to look into word processing. She said a lot of men are getting into it and they are making over $30 an hour. I went to school and have been doing that for the last 20 years. I have been with the same firm for 15 now. I work in New York city and the firm I work for is one of the top 100 law firms in the country.
Over the years, the job description has changed. I still do word processing, but also was trained as an Edgar operator.

I design websites and logos. I hope to specialize in ecommerce soon.
