Thinking about shaving the dome
« on: May 19, 2009, 12:16:09 PM »
Hey all! This is a very interesting community - I found it because the past month or so I have been thinking about shaving my head completely bald...mainly due to the fact that baldness is in my family and there is no stopping it.

A little about myself. Im 21 (almost 22). I started noticing the fact that my hair was thinning around 17. My hairline isn't receding, its just that it has been getting thinner up top over the years. At the moment I think its right around that time when its becoming noticeable, and Im getting really, really tired of being self conscious about it. I've started to enter a hat-phase (me being a baseball fan) but I don't want to rely on that, since you cant wear a baseball cap everywhere. I've also been taking Propecia for years, and its likely helped me, but there is no way to know if it will continue to do this, and exactly how much its helping me. And Im still self-conscious.

The reason why Im thinking about doing this now is because Im about to start graduate school in a completely new town (in one month), where Im not going to know many people, and I think it may make the transition easier.

I worry about not being able to attract women as much as I have been able to in the past (Im still single), but I suppose a bald head is better than a thinning head.

Im attaching some pictures of myself now for you all to see what Im working with

I picked some pictures of me outside where the sun seems to expose it a little more.  If I had my own camera I'd part it up top just to show how thin its getting.

Notice one picture has a hint of a beer belly - but that problem can be fixed! :)

I guess Im just looking for support/inspiration. Im increasingly leaning towards doing this soon.

welcome   i am 31 and did the hat thing sence 7th grade up until 4 days ago. i mean i woke up and my hat went on, went to bed the hat came off. that was it. i shaved my head about 6 mounth ago and still had the hat. i found the sly guys web page last week, shaved my head and found alot of info. thought i would still need the hat so went to the store and had it in the van. when i got out i thought of the stuff these guys where saying and left it in the van. so to make a long story short. shave it for 30 days to get use to it. if you dont like it will grow back. but look around on here and stick to it. its nice not have to make sure you have your hat handy.

you want to see hair on something round, then you can look at the hair on my a** as your kissin it!

Welcome Mox!

Calling Penmouse.....give Mox a mock-up shaved head.  Let's see how he'll look.

I'm betting that a Sly dome will do wonders for Mox.

Welcome Mox!!

You need to get off that Propecia regardless of what you do. It's nasty stuff.
Think of all the money you will save not having to buy Propecia.... you can use a little of that extra cash to buy a good razor and some good blades. I'm sure the rest of the money you save will come in handy while in Grad school.

Shave it off and give it a try... you can always grow it back later if you like. The change will be drastic so keep it shaved for 30 DAYS..... this will give you and your family and friends time to adjust to your new look.

More than likely it will work out for you.  I'm 20, about to be 21 and I can't wait to get out to the good bars and pick up some ladies.  You still have some time so think about it and if it doesn't work you can go back to the hat for a while... But I don't think that will happen. Doooo iiiitttt

Haha, thank you for the picture.

I like how you added the goatee. Thats something I might also be able to pull off.

I guess its all about just letting go of all inhibitions and taking the plunge....

Mox, welcome to SBG!  Give shaving a try for 30 days.  Once you've passed the 30 day mark (and probably even sooner) you'll notice that your confidence will be way up.  So, don't worry about the ladies, you'll be shocked at how they will come out of the woodwork.

Well Ive been asking friends and family about it and mostly gotten negative reactions. It seems people aren't very comfortable with the idea of me being bald.

Regardless, Im still leaning towards going ahead with it. Can anyone either tell me or link me to a thread with the best method on how to shave all of my hair off?

Bro, take some clippers take it down as far as you can and use a razor on the rest. You could also go to a barber and tell them to take it all off.

Your going to ROCK the look bro O0

Hey Mox, the family and friends are usually the harshest critics but typically come around.  Here's a link to head shaving routines.

Thanks for the replies.

Reactions haven't all been completely negative from more friends I've talked to. I also got some more advice from another bald acquaintance who has the sly look as well.

Im just really tired of being self conscious about my thinning hair, and tired of paying for Propecia.

I feel like this is the only good, permanent solution.
