New guy from Houston TX
« on: May 10, 2009, 09:23:40 PM »
Hey guys, started considering shaving my head. For the last few years I've been getting my head buzzed at a number 1. Buzz it myself now and then, but have trouble trying to keep it looking good around the ears, and not to mention trying to edge/clean the back of the neck.

I've been hesitant about shaving my head.  Funniest thing that really got me thinking about going for it was reading a wall ad in Minute Maid Park before an Astros game for HeadSlick.  I spent 30 minutes before the game looking at HeadSlick products and info on my cell phone before the game.  Today, I spent time researching online and found this site, and after reading some posting, decided I needed to join and get things started.

One of my concerns is irritation and cuts.  When I used to blade shave my face, my neck in particular really had issues with irritation and cuts; so bad a Dermatologist told me to never use a blade and always use a good electric razor.

So I'm figuring on investing in some HeadSlick and HeadBlade products and going for it.  If I find that I have the same irritation problem shaving my head that I had with shaving my face, does anyone have good suggestions for an electric razor that works well and doesn't tear up the skin?  Yes I have sensitive skin.

Look forward to hearing from you guys.
David

Welcome to SBG!  We'll help you get your routine dialed in.  The HeadBlade is a good start.  Don't forget the 20% discount in the discount section.

Welcome David.   Making sure you prep well before shaving and have a quality razor may help cut down on the irritation.  Don't use disposables.  Check out the varioius routines in Head Shaving section and that may help.

Hi David!  Welcome to SBG... Houston is a great town!  One of my favorites...

As Paul said, check out the Head Shaving section... lots of people have the same issues!  One thing you may want to do is start shaving in the shower... get a fog-free mirror and give it a go.  I used to get irritation on my neck when shaving at the sink, but once I started shaving in the shower, no more irritation!

Good luck and again, welcome!

David,
B-Rob and Paul gave you great advice.I'm also a dedicated Headblade user. It's very easy to use (just don't apply too much pressure on the blade when shaving...also make sure to keep the wheels (Sport version) or plastic hub (Classic version) in contact with your skin when you shave). You'll find you may need a regular razor to touch up around the ears (or maybe the electric).

Good luck with your new found slyness. The SBG's are here to help with questions.

Appreciate the responses guys.  So ordered the collection of product from HeadBlade/HeadSlick, should arrive the middle of the week.

Went to Fry's Electronics and found the Panasonic ES8249K Wet/Dry Linear Shaver on Sale for $99, online seems to be running $119 on sale.  Red seems to swear by the Panasonic Linear shavers so going to give it a try.  Will also be trying the HeadBlade.

Got the camera out and got some "before" shots together.  As soon as I go Sly this week will get the "after" shots together, and see what the consensus is.

David, I tried the Panasonic Linear, and it is ALMOST as close as a blade.  Make sure you don't use it dry; unlike a Norelco or other passive electric, it will bite you!  :Xo! Slick things down and keep it wet  O0
It will probably get you 95-98% there, but I still had to touch things up with my Fusion.  O0
If you're trying to avoid a blade, I suppose it's the next best thing.  Whatever you decide, the prep and the right shaving lubricant can make all the difference.  The Head Slick Shave Cream is about the best thing out there!  O:O   Enjoy the new you!  8)

Welcome!  I was in the same boat as you.  I was nervous about irritation, since my face and neck also get irritated with a blade.  I shave my face with a Braun Series 7.  It's expensive, but very good.

So, I have tried shaving my head with the electric.  It does a pretty good job, but not as good as a blade.  I also quickly found that my scalp is much different than my face and neck.  Once I figured out the routine and got my shaving method correct, I have no irritation at all.

One warning though...fight the temptation to give up.  The back of my head was really irritated at first.  It was worse, when I tried a new product that my skin did not like.  However, I kept at it and now my skin is tough and happy.  I get no irritation at all.  I shave with a HeadBlade and HeadSlick.  When I do shave my face with a blade, I use HeadSlick on it too.  Good stuff!

Good luck and keep at it for 30 days.  Fight through any irritation, nicks, etc.  You will get better at shaving and your head will get better at accepting the shave.   O0
