Another hearty welcome Dave.  You are leaning toward the Sly look so I say go for it.  I have a full head of hair and have thought about letting it grow back and decided that was the longest 30 seconds of my life.  Headlube or baby oil really does the shine good.

Hey Dave, welcome to SBG's and you've come to the right place for encouragement and support. It sounds to me like you want to shave it, so just go ahead and do it.

Once you get that inkling to have a clean, smooth head, it eats at you. Just ask any of the guys.
 
Use a good cream or gel, a Mach III with a fresh blade, and just take your time and do it right.

For your shine, I highly recommend the HeadLube Glossy, gives a super shine to the noggin'.
