Hi All,
My name's Casey Jones and i've got to admit i've been lurking for a whole minute now. This site truly has a fantastic deposit of information and emotional support not provided in any other forum or context that i've encountered and i want to give a huge thanks for that.
Some basic stats:
I'm a twenty year old college junior from the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex who attends the University of Texas during the school months. I'm currently seeking degrees in economics and mathematics with a specialization in statistics and data analysis and no idea what to do once i graduate! I'm living with my parents this summer in Euless (if anybody's familiar with the area) and making a 50 minute commute each way to do an internship in Frisco, Texas. While my heart belongs in Austin, I've got a semester abroad set up at the Sorbonne in Paris this fall and my plane leaves.......... you guessed it, September 11th! I'm actually sort of following my girlfriend over there as I can't get any credit in math or eco and I already took all the language classes required for my degree, but they've got a class in wine tasting and uhhhhhh the exchange rate couldn't realistically get any worse could it? Oh also it's one of those cases where the woman has tricked the man into wanting to be with her for the rest of his life, darn.
I went ahead and did the deed last week. I'd been considering it for probably six months. My hair line isn't terrible (probably between Norwood 2 and 3), but when it starts receding at 18 or 19, you can imagine it's not going to get any better.
This isn't the first time I've gone shaved. My senior year of highschool, I was on the pep squad and it was one of the best male bonding experiences of my life. We were the guys who got to perform skits at every pep rally, you know dress up in drag, dress up as celebrities, wrestle in pools of jello against school administrators, exercise excessive amounts of stupidity and simulated violence and the like. We also ran flags at football games whenever our boys scored as well as pumped up the crowd when we weren't running. We actually didn't get much rest from running as our team is one of the if not the best highschool teams on the planet. (Here's an ESPN link showing Euless, Trinity ranked number 1 in the country for the upcoming season
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/recruiting/football/news/story?id=3523310) Anyway, we Trojan Men pledged to shave our heads if our team made it to the State Championship. The rest is history, our team made it to the championship, we shaved our heads, and then our boys won their first title.
The only problem is that my hair never really grew in the same after that. It had probably already started thinning slightly, but as I had ridiculous hair styles before that, i never really noticed. I don't think i had a conservative haircut between the 6th and 12th grades.
I'd been on the fence the last couple of months, but with the encouragement expressed to others on this site, i knew the solution to all the internal whining and moaning in my head about my hair. I waited another week after making the decision because i was set to be the best man in one of my best friends' wedding. I didn't want the bride coming after me if the paleness on my dome took attention away from her and the bridesmaids looking stunning in their dresses! A woman scorned........
As a side note, that best friend was also on the pep squad, but wimped out when we shaved our heads. I think it may be a musician thing as he and one of the only other guys to wimp out were both in my band. I went up to visit my friend last thursday when he got back from his honeymoon and instead of the normal teasing it seems a lot of guys are the victims of in the first few weeks of shaving, i was given another chance to tear him down a few for not doing it in high school with the rest of us!
Anyways guys, to wrap up a long intro. I think the style looks great and it seriously makes me look a heck of a lot more grown up. I'll post some before and after pics once i get them and you'll see how radically different it is. I know some young dudes see it as a real detriment, but it's almost a stylized rite of passage into adulthood for me. Thanks for everything i've taken away just lurking, and i hope to contribute!
