Kayaking

I've been wanting to buy a kayak since moving here 3 years ago, since I live just 5 miles from a great lake. Two weeks ago I finally bought one. When I take it on the lake, I get into places you can't see otherwise. Lots of wildlife, even paddled under a nest with a bald eagle in it (a young one) screaming at me. I also wanted to use the kayak for fishing.
I was out today in a remote area when a large boat came in my area; hey, it's a big lake, they can find their own good fishing area. Came up to me and then I saw "water patrol" on the side. Wanted to see my PFD; yes I had one, I was sitting on it. Then my registration for the kayak...nope, got to get one next week. Only three times out and I already got busted.
I buy all my kayak supplies at a store near me. Any outdoor gear you could want for camping, climbing, kayaking. Owner and his wife run it and a store next to it so one person can operate both at once. Now all my kayak supplies are on receipts that say Warren Dance Supply. Kind of contrasting business'!

You have to register a friggin kayak there? That's crazy!
Before I broke my pelvis I used to enjoy kayaking whitewater. Loads of fun. What kind/length did you go with?

In some states a kayak is in the same class as a canoe. Thankfully in MN they are not. Just another way of getting more money out of people.

Isn't that the sole function of government these days?

It seems to be in this country. I assumed it was the same everywhere.

Up here in northern WI we have a bike/snowmobile trail called "The Bearskin Trail". They allow sled owners to get one license to cover however many sleds they own. Bicycle riders have to get one license for each bike. WTF? The sleds tear up the trail all winter, noisy, smoky, etc. Bikes have little impact. Can't figure that one out.
As far as I know kayaks don't have to be registered here in WI but who knows what the brainiacs in Madison will come up with tomorrow?

I never realized a kayak would need a permit. No they did not give me a citation, just advice. I checked online, and a permit cost's $15 and is good for three years here in Ohio. It's an Islander, 9' 6", just right for what I want to use it for.

yep, perfect for your use. If ya ever wanna try some whitewater consider something like a Crazy 88. They're a blast.

It's actually a trail permit. It's about $20 a year for each bicycle. They explain that it's for trail maintainence. But nobody can figure out why one person with 6 snowmobiles only has to get one trail permit to cover all their sleds.

no
Went to get my registration today; explained how I got "pulled over". They said a guy was in recently who was cited, cost him $150! He didn't have a registration or a life jacket. I had the life jacket, though I was sitting on it. Because of that I got by with a warning. Glad they didn't ask for my fishing license. Guess a better get one of those as well.
ooops
