I'm way late on this thread, but I say go for it bludger!
It sounds like your ready for a change and all the advice from the guys is positive. We moved out of NY last year and we haven't looked back. I too was looking for a more comfortable life, with more space and a lower cost of living. My former borough (SI) was getting too crowded (overbuilt, overpopulated) and real estate was just ridiculous.
Anyway, coming out here was one of the best things we've done. I have a home now with a square footage and lot I could never have touched back East. Not a Mcmansion, mind you, I never wanted one anyway, But a comfortable one level, split floor plan with open layout, high ceilings and arched entries, nice touches and three car garage.
I encourage you to go for it, you will not regret it, and for sure you'll have much more opportunity to pursue the outdoor activities which you have been missing.
Good luck and keep us posted!
Schroman, I agree with BA, you may want to think about that, especially with housing being in your favor. Sometimes you just gotta go for it. It sounds like a place you really love bro. Why wait?
