Hello fellow chrome domes...Just wondering...Are any of you fond of extremley spicy and fiery food? How about a fondness for Habaneros or Jalapenos?
Me well I love the stuff...I mean really love it...My favorite is the fiery Habanero...I will usually buy a dozen every few weeks and chop them up and eat them with any meal that I have. I find the hotter the better. I've eaten them for so long that I actually get a nice buzz after I eat them.
I like the taste of Jalapenos but I dont find them hot enough for me. However with the red birds eye chillies that are common in a lot of Asian cooking, those little things will knock you on your ass.
I have just purchased 10 Naga Jolokia seeds off Ebay recently. Naga chillies are the hottest chillies in the world. Hot peppers are measured with Scoville units(
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scoville_scale).
The common Bell Pepper has a Scoville rating of 0.
Cayenne Peppers rate 30,000 SU.
Jalapenos are about 8,000
The Serrano Pepper rates at 23,000
My favorite the Habanero chili rates in at 350,000 SU
But the big daddy Naga Jolokia is in at over 1 Million SU's!!

I devour hot and spicy food. So much so that I grow my own so that I have a years supply on hand at all times. I grow Hungarian Hot Peppers, Sport Chilis, Serranos and Jalapenos. I do a great deal of Asian cooking, Vietnamese, Thai, and Indian so the peppers get put to good use.

I'm in Texas -- jalapenos are a tasty fruit snack!
I love spicy foods, but only to the point where the flavor starts to get overpowered by the heat. Flavor first, heat second.

saintc, Naga Jolokia chilies are native to Northeast India...they are used in some Indian curries, especially Phaal. Many Indian restaurants will not display this on their menus, you have to request it.
I will post a review soon.

Great information, I have a friend who's from the New Delhi region, I'll get with him and see about this. I really like curry, Madras or hotter and Thai curries, especially the fish are great. One of my Indian style deals is to use a commercial Tandoori spice on chicken, w/ lemon, yogurt, etc., then smoke it w/ Mesquite on indirect heat for about 1 1/2 hours, Tex-Indian I guess you might say. The meat is tender, tinged w/ the red from the spice and soooo tasty. Might have to do that this weekend. My mouth is watering, might have to hit the Pho shop for lunch.

I agree with the Bear. If all you can taste is the peppers it doesn't rate IMO.

I love spicy food and agree most of the time, the hotter the better.
I have had instances where I have felt like food was prepared just to be overwhelmingly hot and no regard to the actual flavor was considered and that kinda bugs me... I like hot but I like it to enhance my food not dominate it or to "challenge me".
Habanero and Jalapenos peppers are definitely favorites, as well as cyanne and other flavor types peppers. I use green peppers in the jar for the juice to dribble over black eyed peas or greens.
I love hot sauces too and eat hot sauce on almost everything. I just cant get enough of the heat.
I also am a fan of the Red Hot Chilli Peppers (the band).
I have paid the price the next day... but its a small price to pay for this sadistic culinary joy.

I agree here. I use to love eating REAL hot stuff. I would douse just about all my foods with it. But then one day out of the blue I realized I wasn't really getting to enjoy the taste of the actual food I was eating. All I was tasting was "hot." So I have pretty much stopped using hot sauces all together. I will still use it now and then but in very little amounts. Just enough to give my food that "kick."

Not normally. But there's this spicy orange sauce at a Mexican place I go to called La Victoria. It's hot, but it's so damn good you can't stop putting it on your burrito.
