At what point did broccoli get tasty?
« on: April 17, 2008, 02:04:23 PM »
As I am sitting here eating my fresh veggies I cant help but wonder, at what point in my life did Broccoli become so delicious? I used to eat broccoli because I had to and I just now missed a phone call because I had my mouth stuffed with the stuff.

When is it that you make the turn and those foods that as a youngster were the "Choke it down so you get desert" items became a food of voluntary consumption?

I used to despise brussle sprouts and now I cant get enough of them. Broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms... same thing.

What is the food you hated as a kid / young adult that you absolutely love now?

I think my taste for different foods changed when I went thru puberty...like last year...lol  No but really...i was in my early teens when I started eating different foods.  Funny thing is though....when I was  younger...I use to eat sardines in mustard sauce and beef liver.....all those weird things...but never liked cauli. or broc. and stuff like that.  Now I despise sardines and beef liver( i still like chicken livers though)  so kinda weird I know ...but remember...its Me Timmay!

Broccoli is great, after we steam it (we steam all our veggies) we toss it w/ a little olive oil and garlic, salt and freshly ground pepper, serve and a few scrapes of parmesean cheese.  Fantastic.

I know my tastes change, when I was very young I loved bell peppers, green or red, then as a teenager they tasted strange, now like everything else they taste fantastic.  Love cauliflower too, particularly gratineed, I've even eaten stewed okra, but I like lots of tomato and fixed so it isn't slimy.  Fried okra's better than popcorn.

Mostly I find the veggies are best, like almost everything, if fresh-never canned--and not overcooked.  We go to Whole Foods for veggies a lot, much better quality than the other chains and worth the extra price--plus they sell local veggies as fresh as can be.

I can't say that i know your experience exactly.  As long as i can remember, I have loved broccoli, asparagus, artichokes, and the likes.  But i am not a fan of the Cheerio and Ketchup mix anymore.

Spent a lot of time on a farm growing up so I grew up eating every kind of vegetable.  Still haven't found one I DON"T like.

I still hate the things I hated when I was a kid.  Broccoli is at the top of the list.   !*u%e

I have always loved vegetables, like Paul, never had a vegetable I didnt like.

Corn on the cob and tomatoes being my favorite. I rarely eat any vegetable out of a can with the exception of tin tomatoes which are good if you are making a soup or stew.

saintc, your broccoli recipe sounds good, may have to try that.

I think it was when I was in my teenage years.  My mom always made this broccoli casserole.  I would never try it because I never liked broccoli as a youngster.  She made it once for Christmas Dinner and I said the heck with it, I'll give it a shot.  I've loved broccoli ever since.

It was after I was on my own.  My mother gave me her "Sudden Death Asparagus Casserole Recipe" (the name is a joke - when their is a sudden death in community, she can have it, from time of hearing the news to the family's table, in one hour).  I was making it once for a covered dish dinner and bought brocolli by mistake.  Made it anyway and subbed the brocolli.  It was awesome.
