Haiti Bound!

Hey all, my name is Tim from Indiana...I go by Timmj or the more popular name Timmayyy!!!!!!!!!  I am a addict.  Im addicted to shaving my head.  Anyways....on with my question.

I will be going to Haiti again this fall, October to be exact.  What I need to know...has anyone ever had to shave their noggin in the "rough"?  What I mean by in the "rough" is Haiti...third world country, in a make shift shower consisting of tile walls and a pipe that sticks out of the wall, one knob....which controls the water ...will it be cold or will it be luke warm? Depends on how much sun was out the day before or are there going to be more tadpoles come out of the pipe again like they did last year?  I am so use to using hot water as a pre-shave prep.  Being that I doubt that Im gonna have hot water...what do you all suggest?  I have seen in the camping section at WalMart they have these solar hot water bags.  You fill them up with water and hang them out in the sun and it heats the water.  I would only imagine those would only be good in the afternoon after the water had time to heat up.  I really am not looking forward to letting it grow out while im there cause I will be gone for 12 days...and that is just unheard of.  I did visit a street barber while I was there and he had hot water...if it seems neccessary...I guess I could pay the barber to give me a shave every morning.  Besides he probably needs the money more than I do.  Whats your thoughts on all of this?

I think I'd bring along my electric.  Won't be as smooth as a blade, but it's better than nothing.

I dont even own an electric razor.  Never liked them for one.....so you are saying ...i need to go buy one?  yuck...

You can buy a cheap battery powered electric at Wal-Mart of $10 (or less).  It might be easier than dealing with shaving in cold water.  Or just don't worry about it and let it grow for a few days.

Timmay if I were you I would just go to the street barber. I would cost you what? Like 5 US cents to get a nice barber shave every other day and like you said, he needs the money. I've seen many Sly black Haitians so headshaving is definetley in the know there so no doubt the street barber would be able to do a good job.

That would be my recommendation as well.  Or you can just have your head waxed before you go and then you won't have to worry about it at all.

I'd be concerned about the sanitary conditions - i.e., are those razor blades clean?  I just wouldn't ...

I think Jdog it is more like a buck a day to have it done.  Still its cheap and I really had a good time with the barbers there.  The only thing that Im worried about is you have to be really careful with the way they do things there.  They just use those old blades like you would use in the old time razors....what ...called double edge blades maybe?  That is what they use to trim up around the neck, and they dont use the razor...just blade in hand.....and with the many diseases they have there....and the lack of regulations....I would be worried about getting a possible nic...so really for health reasons I have to be very cautious...

I'd also worry about the sanitary conditions of shaving in Haiti.  I'd also recommend an electric to keep it down while you're there.  Though, you could always brave the razor and write a post on "How to shave in Haiti."
