Push-ups are one of the best exercises you can do and they can be done almost anywhere for free.

It is amazing what good shape one can get into doing the "free stuff"....pushups, situps and running around the neighborhood.  Add to that some FREE pullups and dips at the local playground, and yer in biz O0

I posted this in my fitness goal thread.  But it bears repeating.

The best shape I EVER ACHIEVED in my life was gradually working up to where I was doing 100 situps and 100 pushups a day and running to and from work (1.5 miles each way).   NO GYM, NO WEIGHTS.

So ya really don't need to put it off until you can afford to join a gym, or buy a Bowflex, or one of them idiotic ab_____ (fill in the blank) fad machines.

Push-ups will give a work out to so many other parts of your body, not just the arms. They can also be done in a variety of ways. That's great you had such an achievement Meister, I am unable to run as much as I used to or would like to. I was thinking that maybe if get some more strength around my knees it might be ok. We'll see.

ok excersize gurus. i was born with spina-bifida and situps are not happening. any advice as to getting the ol' abs into some shape other than round? maybe just strengthining the abs area would be more of what i am looking for. all of the normal abs workouts hurt too bad to do long enough to help. sit-ups render me bedridden, as do leg curls, crunches etc. so help a brother guys.

Well, Tim ain't got spina-bifida...that's point #1

I'll ask the lovely Mrs. Meister about that, Paulie.  It's 'cause ab work screws with yer spine / back, eh?  That may be a tough one to get around as ab / "core" work inevitably touches the spine in some fashion.  If flat-back crunches hurt, that's about the least stressing to the back.  HHHhhhhhmmmmmm.....

My $0.02

STRETCH ON A REGULAR BASIS!!!  Daily is good.

Flexibility decreases as we age.  As we lose flexibility we "adjust" our posture, carriage and activities.  Add in a poorly designed chair and a sedentary job and things can go bad very quickly.
It's time to kick ass and chew bubblegum, and I'm all out of gum!

Planks, I call them core holds, are an AWESOME workout.

One thing that I have found works wonders for the minor aches and pains that accompany working out is arnica.  It comes in gel and cream forms and is available in most pharmacies and health-food stores.  It is also all-natural.  I'm not a big believer in alternative remedies, but this is one that really does work for me when nothing else will.  Just rub some on the affected area at bedtime and by morning it is feeling much better.  It also helps to fade bruises.

Another, more advanced form of the plank is to modify the position slightly so your palms are flat on the floor.  Believe it or not, it makes a huge difference.

But it will wear me out......i get tired too easily........LOL

That's the whole point, to wear you out and gradually increase your endurance.

I'm a reformed couch potato.  I don't think there was ever anybody who hated to exercise more than I did.  My weight was beginning to creep up and I knew it was only going to get worse as I got older.  When you reach your mid-30s, that's about the time when you can really start falling apart if you don't start taking better care of yourself (not just you, TimmJ, all of us).

Like I said, I absolutely hated to exercise but I decided to work on getting myself in better shape about 3 1/2 years ago, and now it's rare that I don't get to the gym 5 times a week.  And when I do miss the occasional day here and there, I really miss it and feel guilty.  I never thought that I would feel that way!  In the past, I was always looking for any excuse not to go to the gym.

The key is to do it in baby steps.  Start gradually incorporating healthier foods into your diet, and gradually eliminating the unhealthy ones.  Start exercising moderately once or twice a week, and gradually increase it.  Doing it gradually is less intimidating.  The changes aren't as abrupt, and it makes it easier for you to be successful.

Take a look at the article I posted a few days ago about the 95-year-old couple who work out in my gym.  Those people are in better shape than a lot of people who are 10, 15, and 20 years younger than them, in no small part because they've worked on staying fit all their lives.  This is what we all should be striving for.

If you're over 30, now is the time to start working on a healthier lifestyle.  This is the stage of life where metabolisms start slowing down, aches and pains and other medical problems start setting in, and unhealthy habits that we got away with in our 20s start catching up with us.  None of us can stop aging, but I firmly believe that a healthy diet and exercise can dramatically slow down the process.

Off my soapbox now ....

I get shoulder aches and pains too, they usually go away when I get my lady to walk across my back sideways.  I'm not sure if its a good or bad thing though lol
