Its OK fella's. Thats waht this site is for . Support. It will come to you all when you are ready. Just be glad that you found this site because we not only support you all but we will give you our honest advice. Everyone is different, there are no two people alike...and if there are...all they do is fight.

Anyways....take those babysteps by all means....you will get comfortable with it. Some guys will just take the plunge sorta like I did and just shave it off, keeping in mind it will grow back in a few weeks. Yes it was a shock not only to my family but myself. I stood in the bathroom for like an hour I know...tryin to get up the courage to walk out. I did it and got alot of dropped jaws and Dad! WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR HAIR!.....My youngest daughter even ran to the neighbors house shouting MY DAD IS BALD MY DAD IS BALD! LOL actually it was sorta comical...but hey 5 months later...im still shaving it. Have gotten a few comments about how people couldnt imagine me wiht hair anymore. It growns on ya....so when you are ready....let us know...so we can cheer you on! Good Luck guys

To "prepare" the wife, buzz the fringe really tight, a 1 or 2 max, and clean up the top at 0. After a few weeks, just do it, and if the pressure of the spouse is too much, let it grow back after thirty days. With the approval you'll be getting from third parties, friends and acquaintances in her presence, she may come around. What have you got to lose, but looking somewhat older than you need to for a 30 day trial?

Adam,
You are exactly where I was last Summer (July) when I finally took the plunge after an eternity of sitting "on the fence" (( just ask the other guys ))
I had similar issues with the wife. RazorX is spot on with his "forgiveness rather than permission" approach. And going gradually shorter helps too. Do the fringe at #2 for a few days; then go down a notch over a two week period. By the time you are at .50 the actual razor shave will not even be that big of a step.
Since you are mpb already; I would think your wife would not take too long to get used to the whole thing. And then, she might gradually start to like the fact that you've taken a radical kind of step .
But I think the only solution with your wife is to "just do it." It's your head / hair, and she will just have to get used to it (after all, she had no say in the top hairs' falling out, did she?

Welcome to SBG's Adam, glad you joined us.
I can only echo what all the guys have already said, and it's some very good advice.
I was in a similar position about 8 months ago, and I was a fence sitter for about 3 of them.
I had the mpb in front and the "hole" in back, as my daughter called it.
All I can say is take it down gradually, from #2 to 1 and even 0. I know you will want to eventually shave it all off because the closer I got to the scalp with my regular buzzing, I just knew it was inevitable. (I had actually always said if my hair starts going, I would shave it off).
If you do it, give it some time to become familiar with seeing your smooth skin. Use a good razor, as Warhawk stated. I think once you do, you will utter the same words as many of us;
"Why didn't I do this sooner".
Good luck and keep us posted.
Joe

Thanks for the welcome. You definitely seem like a good group of guys. Even if I'm not ready to take it slick yet it's cool to know there are others out there dealing with the same thing. After reading some of the postings I can't help but think about getting rid of what's left but I just don't think I'm at that point yet. Hell, only recently have I been brave enough to lose the hat. Looks like it will be baby steps for me.
If and when I get to the point where I am ready to go "SLY" any good suggestions on how to get the wife ready too?
Thanks again guy,
Adam
Adam, welcome to SBG! I wore hats for a long time and almost everywhere I went. I suggest you do what I did - gradually shave it down over a period of time and then by the time you decide to go SLY both you and your wife will be used to the look and it won't be that big of a deal. When I finally went SLY, no one really noticed until I said something because I had buzzed it down so low anyway. Good luck!
