My "OH sh*t!" Moment
« on: December 19, 2014, 10:46:59 AM »
Although I've been shaving for quite some time now, it wasn't the initial plan.  About 15 years ago (and with a full head of hair) my wife wanted me to shave it off to see how it would look.  So I obliged.

After wearing it shaved for about 3 years (about 12 years ago), she wanted me to grow it out again.  As I was growing it out, it happened.  My "OH SHI*T" moment.  I noticed that I was actually going bald.

So at this point I had to make a command decision.  Needless to say I've been shaving it ever since.  Initially (as most do) I had problems finding the right razor, shaving creams/gels, moisturizers, and treatments that worked for me.  But over time, I found the right combination of products conducive to the contour of my head and my skin type.  This put me in the unique position to have founded the rapidly growing subscription box service, "The HeadShavers Club".  We deliver to our members' doorsteps razors and shaving products (specific to shaving the head) each month.

Tyler is a genius for starting this community of Head Shavers and I commend him on that.  I see men of various ages, races, backgrounds, and religions coming together here, getting and lending advice, as well as sharing stories.

So ... that's my story in a nutshell.  Thank you Tyler for the community and thank you "community" for all the fantastic/interesting talking points and topics.

As I was growing it out, it happened.  My "OH SHI*T" moment.  I noticed that I was actually going bald.

I remember a Seinfeld episode in which that same thing happened. The guy was fine with being shaved smooth until Elaine got him to try growing it out and he realized he really was bald.

Glad you joined us, sir!

Bald.Metalhead,

Hey, thanks for visiting the site bro.  We are currently "desperately" working with both our shippers and payment processing center.  The initial cost would've been closer to $70 if we hadn't negotiated the razors, shaving cream, and refills to be free of charge.  The $40 is (unfortunately) a hit from the shippers and payment processors for setup of billing and other administration fees that they have.

We are hearing that there may be other alternatives (i.e. companies) whom we can partner with to significantly reduce OR get rid of that $40 altogether.  We hope to have that alleviated very shortly.

Again, Sorry for the inconvenience.  However, understanding your confusion and given the diplomacy of your post - I would like to send you a free (without the administration fees) box when our January boxes go out.  If you could email me at "info@theheadshaversclub.com", I will get that out to you the 2nd week of January.

Thanks again!

P.S:  Does the name "metalhead" refer to actual metal or music? :-)

I'm a Metalhead with music. That particular genre has gotten me through some really rough times in life, and was instrumental in finding the person who turned into my amazing, loving,  beautiful wife.

Also, thank you for the offer. You'll be getting my details in a forthcoming email, and I'm hoping it turns out better for me than my 21.00 a month 3 pack of mach 3s from walmart.

Awesome!  Hey, if you get the opportunity - check out one of my cousins, he's been playing guitar for years (here at https://soundcloud.com/warren-hughes).  Look forward to hearing from you.  Also, have you ever considered shaving with a double edged razor?  Many people are starting to go with those in lieu of the cartridge razors.  We are actually in discussions to switch from cartridge razors to double edged razors.  Not only are the DEs more sanitary, they are less expensive.  We are hoping to bring this to our subscribers.

I have just had a similar moment.  I first shaved about 4 years ago at the first sign of MPB starting.  I just had "slight" thinning at the crown.  I have been off work for two of my kids having wisdom teeth surgery, and then for the Christmas holidays.  Out of curiosity and laziness, I decided to let it grow to see how far the MPB had progressed.  I would put myself at a Norwood 5 or 6 based on what I see after 10 days.  While the sides are looking quite full, the top and crown are only fuzz.  I am off another week and will probably let it grow until I go back to work just to confirm.  Unless the growth takes off next week, I can no longer claim to be BBC.

I didn't actually realise there is a scale of baldness until this post.

My hair had thinned considerably when I started shaving but I still hadn't lost enough to be considered bald. There is a tendency to think that if we stop shaving we can revert back to exactly the same look we had before.  I found out otherwise several years ago when I was laid up with the flu for a week and was too sick to shave.  The fringe quickly filled in but only a little fuzz appeared on top. I had been shaving for a few years and did not want to have hair but it was still strangely disconcerting.  A few years later I saw a picture of the back of my shaved head and realized that the top of the fringe had lowered and developed that classic "dip".  Again, it was a strange feeling to realize that I was now "officially" completely bald.

I actually do still have a few strays on top - I doubt they would even be visible if I let them grow out but there is just enough there that I still have to run the razor over the top of my head to keep it feeling smooth.  At this point I'm not sure I will ever lose them, although I would like to.  I suppose most people still have some minimal fuzz and aren't naturally completely smooth.

Yup, this is exactly me. I can grow a fringe back, and it's low on the head, and dips deep in the back. (In fact, a closely buzzed version is what I'm wearing right now for the winter with a full beard just to be different.) The top of my head gets fuzz that's just annoying to the touch but mostly invisible and I keep it shaved smooth.
