Dress shirts

I have trouble finding dress shirts that fit me properly.  I have a pretty thick neck (16 1/2" collar size), so I have to go with a little bigger size to accommodate it.  It's getting harder and harder to find fitted shirts for some reason, so there's usually too much material around the waist. They shrink in the laundry -- always at the neck but never anywhere else.  I was out walking at lunchtime today and saw my reflection in a store window as I was passing by.  The somewhat baggy shirt (everywhere but at the collar) made me look huge.  It doesn't help that I've got a somewhat stocky build to begin with.  Does anyone else have this problem?

What brands of shirts are you wearing? 

I have found that Brooks Brothers and Nordstrom brand shirts are really the only shirts I like.  They are more expensive (3X the cost of others) but they are wrinkle free and tend to last 5 times longer.  I know that both brands make a fitted shirt.

Not sure if this is true with the dress shirts, but I found at good ol' JcPenny they have "sport-cut" style suits...big chest, smaller waists....

you know us bodybuiler types have got it hard...just kidding...

but I do have more of that build...

try them out, the suits look great and i don't have that chubby looking problem with that suit...

or have your shirts custom made...it sounds expensive, but if it's a bother to you, it may not be THAT pricey to get what you like on yourself....

Ditto on what BaldAndre said Razor...been buying the athletic cut shirts from Penny's for some time now.  Cut fuller in the chest and shoulders and taper at the waist.   They fit a lot better without all the extra material in the middle.

Thanks for the heads up, I have lost a ton of weight now but still have the broad shoulders etc... hate all that extra material

I have actually worn the JC Penney brand of shirts (Stafford) for many years now.  I liked the way they fit and I liked the fact that the collar bones were sewn in and thus could not be lost.  When my weight started creeping up, I had to switch from the fitted shirts to the regular  , and now that I'm getting back into shape I can't find the fitted ones anymore.  The salesgirl told me they aren't making the fitted shirts anymore.  Not sure if that's true or if she just couldn't be bothered to look into it for me.

The problem I have had with every dress shirt I've ever owned is that the collars shrink when they're being laundered (I send my shirts to the cleaners to be laundered).  When they get to the point where they're choking me, it's time to get new ones.  Maybe I should look into the Brooks Brothers or Nordstrom.  I just hate to spend the extra cash if they are going to shrink as quickly as the others seem to.  But maybe they're higher quality and that won't happen.  Guess I should buy just one and see what happens.

dude, try this out 18 1/2 , 36. that is my shirt size. neck is 18 1/2 sleeve length is 36. have to get dress shirts tailored to fit. even with the 36 waist and little gut. buying dress shirts is a night mare. even tucking in t-shirts is rough cause there is so much loose material around the waist area. damn shoulders and arms. curesed genes.

I have the same issue with suits. The pant size that I wear never matches the jacket size, and vice versa. If I don't get a fitted suit then I'll look like a schmuck. I bought a cheap suit one time when I was young and poorer and had the pants altered, needless to say I felt like I was trying to bring back the MC Hammer look. The women were telling me "you can't touch this!" because I looked like a SCHMUCK.

I like Jos. A. Banks shirts - the 100 % cotton are a little more expensive but really wear well.

Same issue, I used to wear fitted or athletic fit shirts, last time I bought a suit, last year, Men's Warehouse told me they are no longer making fitted or athletic fit.  Had to have them alter a shirt.  I always hated the wings under the arms.
