No covers allowed....so what are you hiding, fellows?
« on: November 22, 2013, 05:16:20 AM »
This weekend, I am bowling in the Southern TNBA (The National Bowling Association) Tournament up in Baton Rouge. Actually, the first part was last night (mixed doubles). When I arrived to check in, the attire for the tournament (for the guys at least), according to the rules, was as follows

1. No shorts
2. No headgear of any kind while bowling (headgear is permitted if you are not bowling)

That said, I saw many of the guys wearing caps.....so just for fun, here's what was the count as far as the male noggins  (among those bowling) were concerned: (NOTE: This is including all races, as I feel we all share one hobby and bleed the same)

Sly with full beard: 8 (including myself)
Sly with Van Dyke: 28
Sly with mustache only: 13 (including 2 handlebars)
Sly and clean shaven: 10
Doughnut hole: 5
Widow's peak: 4
Full blown horseshoe: 9
Horseshoe with ponytail (really?): 2
Full Head of Hair (including Flat Tops):20
No guard/No guard Horseshoe: 11

On a side note, there were also two sly women there, and they rocked the look! They didn't even put on a wig or a hat after the competition was over! Getting back on topic, I was sitting there shaking my head at the two horseshoe/ponytail combinations. but the full blown horseshoe guys for the most part looked serviceable. As for the sly guys, which actually made up more than half of my tally for yesterday, it was nice to see the varying facial styles, and some of them wore earrings which wasn't bad.....Needless to say, as soon as the competition was over, I saw more caps put back on so fast, I thought I was in a Champs store or something......(Oddly enough neither of the ponytail guys put on a hat!). I guess the two events that some of these guys hate the most are tournaments like these and the National Anthem  ;D ;D Today, I am bowling the mixed team, and two of my teammates are sly and bearded like myself....It will be fun to see what some of these guys who normally won't remove headgear are really hiding! Thanks for taking the time to read, just thought I'd share!

Very interesting that the sly outnumbered the non-sly. Are you sure you were counting heads and not bowling balls?   :*))

If I let my hair grow out I would fall into the Horseshoe With Ponytail category which is where I was before I went sly. I can't believe that I was unable to see that until I saw myself in a photo. I can't say that I ever want to go back to that.....not a good look for me. It worked great for Larry Finklestein, though!

LOL! FWIW, given that the average bowler carries 3 bowling balls I'm sure the bowling balls far outnumbered the sly heads...or everyone else for that matter...BTW, many of these people were from places all over the south such as Memphis, Jacksonville, Houston, Mobile, AL, etc. We did have a fair share of New Orleans and Baton Rouge bowlers there though.

Well, buddha, at least you tried it and realized it didn't work....At least these guys with the horseshoe/ponytail combo kept their facial hair decent. It would have looked borderline hippyish if these guys had, say, Duck Dynasty/ZZ Top type beards!

Wow, interesting statistics, Sir Harry!  Almost sounds more like a Sly convention than a Bowling Tournament.  lol.

Maybe there is something genetically connected to being a good bowler and going bald.... maybe I should head down to my local bowling alley and give it a try!     ;)

There has to be some connection for that many sly guys to excel at bowling!

To borrow a line from Caddyshack, they're able to "be the ball".

Sly heads are everywhere usually with some sort of facial hair.  Summer coming up in Oz and sly heads are appearing more and more although we have to be careful about skin cancers and sunburn.

I have to agree that a ponytail with sly or balding head is not a good look, about on a par with a combover.

I'm not sure why SLY guys hide under hats. I do wear hats this time of year BUT only when outside in the weather. My Dad taught me long ago to remove any hats, etc. when entering any building.

I hate wearing hats.  Even in the wintertime, it has to be really cold before I'll break down and put one on.  I do wear a cap on my walk from the train to the office, for sun protection.  I don't like doing it but it's a necessary evil.

Today, it was pretty sly dominant....again....but the funny part was when the officials were walking around and actually had to tell some of the first timers to remove their hats....On a positive note, I have a "Schro" story to tell....One of the guys had SD (sebhorric dermatitis) on the scalp and he had put some medicine on it...He says that he was going to go back to his hotel after the tournament tonight and give sly a try! Will let you know how it goes tomorrow. As for me, I have several caps, some monogrammed, but I don't wear them while bowling because I like showing my sly head with pride. I wear them mostly when outdoors for an extended period but that's about it.

I like hats and almost always wear a cap outside, but I always remove my cap when I am indoors - partly because I was taught that men remove their hats and also because I don't want anyone to think I'm hiding my bald noggin.

Mike EP (and others) It's one thing to hide a horseshoe (especially a bad one)....but I agree with Mike Koz that if you are sly, why are you wearing a cap to hide that nice, sly head (especially indoors). The sad part is, if the guy is a Norwood 6 or 7 part of the horseshoe is still exposed when wearing an adjustable cap!

Keep me posted Harry, I'd love to hear about....oh, my high score is 252, which I'm sure you've dusted many times. Used to bowl league for quite a while, was a 180 avg when I "retired".

With all the time it took to collect all those stats and details, when did you have time to focus on your bowling?
