BABYSITTING @ WORK

It may seem like I have a bug up my a$$ a lot, but its really not the case. This site and the gym are the only 2 places that I use as an outlet for my stress. So here we go...

This maybe a dumb question, but how many of you have to deal with babies @ work? I am a logistics manager and I just switched jobs a month ago to work at a smaller company because of all the political BS. I went from managing 60-70 associates a day to about 10. Also this new place has a lot of workers with a lot of tenure. I figured this would be a walk in the park for me, don't have to worry about training that much, everyone knows what they are doing, no babysitting. Was I wrong :Xo! I got 2 guys that won't respond when I say hello in the morning because I "asked" them to do their jobs. These are grown men too, 40-50yr olds. Another guy that complains about not making enough $$$, yet calls out once a week, and called out today so he misses out on holiday pay.

What the hell is wrong here? Is it me?  :/O

Dude...it's simple...and after years of beating my head against a wall with people that feel like they are entitled it comes down to two words...

***respect and entitlement***

They really don't have respect for themselves (they don't take the time or care to see how lame they look to the world or others) and they don't have respect for others ( they don't care that your job is to make sure they do their job and by them not doing it, they make is difficult for you, no respect)...

self entitlement will be the ruin of our modern society!

Unfortunately THAT is our world. :-[

YOSP.. it's not just you.

I work in a call center and let me tell you.. babysitting is an understatement.. they have no respect, don't give a rats ass...
don't follow most of the code of ethics.. so go out a scream.. but make sure to leave it their go home and enjoy what you have outside of the job............ it's hard yes.. let me tell you.. I'm on call 24/7..out of 5 weeks vacation 2 of them I take without pager. the rest I'm always on call ..

I have the utmost respect for teachers. I think they have a really tough job, but for the most part they are dealing with 18 & under. So this is understanding, or not suprising behavior from a teenager/adolescent. I don't understand when it comes from an adult that is supposed to know better.

BaldAndre is right though, entitlement is the problem...

Why not just do your job and that will ensure you get paid, which ensures your bills get paid, food is on the table, etc, etc.? That seems like an easy one to me. :/O

That is true ... but you would be shocked at how behavior and work ethics have deteriorated in the schools down here.  The fact that many behaviors not tolerated ten years ago in school are now tolerated tells me that our workforce will only deteriorate. 

And I agree with you and BaldAndre - ENTITLEMENT is the problem.  When today's youth  enter the workforce, they will either be unable to keep a job or standards and ethics will be lowered to allow them to remain employed.  Sadly, this gives foreign business a great upper hand.  It will cause even more outsourcing to overseas; where people are glad to get and will do all they can to keep a job.

That's exactly what is happening..

I was talking to the director and he mentioned this..

Should young one's adjust themselves to us or should we readjust ourselves to them. WTF......................

In work enviroment their code of ethics in place. no matter the generation.

where theirs rules in place for everyone no matter gender, age, race. it should be as is.

the next generation replacing us are in for a surprise either that or businesses will close.
they have no respect, not responsive to feedback... and plain Lazy.

My 4 1\2 daughter she's starting school in september. I think we've done so far a good job.

She's brite wanting to learn, she's also very respect full with other's and us. we try to teach her the proper ways.

but she will be exposed to the school systems. where you have kids from diff. values, and up bringing.

I just hope she will turn out like her mother or me.

I am sure she will turn out fine as long as you keep instilling those values into her. Peer pressure is always tough, but I think if she continues to go the right path, she will be able to, most times, differentiate right from wrong.

I think I turned out fine because of the way I was raised. I always hold the door for others, and say thank you and please. I have strayed off the good path, but overall I know that I am doing the right thing most of the time, and when I don't, I usually know the difference. That is why it is tough form me at work not to be dissapointed in others.

You're headed in the right direction.  Teachers are not the ones solely responsible for raising kids.  You've got the right idea. 

It takes a village to raise a child.  Parents, peers (of the right ideals), friends, family.  Keep doing what you're doing and be certain she always is with the right-minded group.

In some of companies that I've worked at, the full-time employees feel like they are untouchable and therefore don't really care anymore.  That attitude is one of the reasons the company I work for is in business.  Bringing sub-contractors in for projects can either start a fire under employees or cause feelings of inadequecy/hate/discontent.

Being a "hired gun" has it's advantages and disadvantages... we come in for a specific job or project and then leave.  Most times though our contracts are renewed multiple times because the quality of work is much above the quality of work of the employees.

For the most part, we stay away from the politics of the company where we're working and do the job we were brought in to do.  The biggest benefit is that when we walk in the door, we hit the ground running...

I have about 10ish people working for me at any given time... I don't have to babysit, because if they cop an attitude or their work is anything less than stellar, I'll hear it from the customer!  Three years and no complaints!

Wow...to try and quote all the relevant posts would have taken a page in itself.  Talk about entitlement...try tenured teachers.  There are quite a few who can't and won't change with the times, feel the way they taught 30 years ago is still valid... refuse to learn computerized tools for teaching and admin work...and it has been my misfortune to work with teachers who refuse kids on their caseload (for special ed) are rude to parents, won't collaborte on teaching materials, time, etc.   Too many teachers and administrators today focused on themselves and not the welfare of the students.   Not that the kids aren't a pain either....Bill hit it on the head with the entitlement isse....kids today feel they are entitled to swear in the halls, refuse to follow instructions, or be generally respectful to the adults.   Whew...that rant is over.

I love this topic, because is reminds me that I'm not the only one that deals with this.

I honestly believe that the "entitlement" attitude is the main reason why the U.S. is becoming so divided between the haves and the have nots.  There are other factors, but I believe this is a huge one.  Most entrepreneurs and successful people (notice that they are separated out) realize that they are not entitled to anything without earning it.  They usually have the attitude of "how can I add value to X (with X being a company, customers, etc.).  They then know that they will gain more by adding more value.

Those that feel they are entitled think completely different.  Instead they think that they shouldn't add any more value to X until they receive what they fell they are entitled.  The problem is, they rarely get what they think they are entitled (because they didn't add value) and thus they either stay stagnant or lower their output.

This is a huge problem for people that have this attitude because they rarely do anything to go better themselves in order to add more value.  Thus, when the company/organization that they work for decides that they no longer need that person, they now are hurt much worse than the guy that faces the same situation but didn't feel entitled.  They usually don't have any extra education or experiences to fall back on and are often faced with having to start over with less pay.

This is one thing that I want to instill into my kids - not to feel that they are entitled to anything without adding enough value to warrant it.
People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.
