Weber Genesis propane here. Use it at least twice a week in the summer. Fast, propane tanks lasts forever before needing to be refilled and it does a great job on everything. Fired it up tonight for a big ol' salmon I caught at Costco recently.

at home it's propane as we are always rushed,, with work, house chores, keeping the outside clean and neet but when I go fishing our hunting or just taking a ride up in the woods, I get the disposable charchoal they work great.. since we are in the woods to relax we just take our time.[/tt]

Propane here....and damn proud of it. To Paul's point, you can add wood chips for flavor.
When I use the smoker, I'll fill it with mesquite, apple, hickory or pecan chips depending on it.

I was talking to my brother-in-law about this the other day and I came up with a good idea. I'm going to design a hybrid grill. I'm going to pipe gas into the grill, but only as a quick way to start the charcoal.
This should allow me to still be lazy, yet get the flavor that I like.

That's a million dollar idea there.

That is sweet...work on the same concept as a gas start fireplace

Why don't you just get something like this?
http://tinyurl.com/2ar9xqWorks well, and wouldn't be any harder to use then the propane starter, there for your able to continue grilling the lazy way.
I'm charcoal all the way now.

I've tried those in the past and they still take a long time to get the coals fired up. With the gas, I wouldn't have to wait to start cooking since the gas would be used to cook the meat after it filters through the charcoal.

I think the propane would burn the charcoal to quick, if you left it on long enough so you can turn the gas off and cook with charcoal, but who knows. What I've done in the past with a gas grill is I got a cast iron box from Lowes, that is made to put wood chips in, soak the wood chips, put them in the box and set it on the grill with the meat, close the lid and you get a nice smoked flavor without all the work.

Yeah, the idea still needs some testing. I've done the wood chips method before as well as a cedar plank.

You could test it in your gas grill, just need another grate, to set above the burners, that you can put the charcoal on. Would be between the burners and the grill part you cook on.

Are you using that plank with propane Tyler? Have always wanted to try cedar, we use maple here on charcoal grill and its awesome. Don't know if our cedar same as western and what kind of flavor that would give.

Ceder is ceder, doesn't matter where it's from. Try mesquite or aspen if you can find some, both add an awesome flavor.
