Lately I've been letting the barber do it when I get buzzed. But if it get too scraggly or some hairs start to grow in oddly(as gray hairs do) I will buzz it down myself in between.
If you have one of those adjustable trimmers with the guard, you can control how low you want to go and it's pretty hard to mess up.

The hard part is trying to keep the edges straight.

True, but I usually do that when I shave my face. Once you get the straight line coming in you really just follow it as a sort of guide.
My biggest problem seems to be keeping under the chin straight.

I've always trimmed my facial hair myself (going on 35 years). Get a good groomer that has several settings, start long and work your way to the setting you like best. Depends on how fast your hair grows and how thick it is. I trim mine to a #2 once a week and shave around the edges everyday.
