For some it takes some grey hair and a few scars before they calculate the long tern effects of their actions. Our state politicos won't pass a law against texting.

 O:O

Texting laws are a joke. They are NOT enforced.

I've seen one place they're enforced, Westchester County NY--if you use your phone without hands free, or text--you're going to get popped--it's like a couple of hundred bucks.  They sit watching people at traffic lights and stop signs in particular--better than a radar stake out.

I saw a coed coming out of a gas station the other day...she was smoking, talking on her cell phone and shifting gears. Talk about distraction! Give her a "Green Stamp", too.  :Xo!

I work on a college campus and texting while walking is a big problem too. We lost a student last year because she was texting while crossing a street. She didn't see the bus coming that hit her. I don't see how a few sentences could be so important that you have to write or read them while driving or walking when your focus is needed else where.
Life has three aspects: Paradox, Humor, and Change.

Paradox: Life is a mystery; don't waste time figuring it out.
Humor: Keep a sense of humor, especially about yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure
Change: Know that nothing stays the same.

The city of Honolulu recently passed a law making it illegal just to hold a phone while crossing a street.

It was only a few years ago that we didn't have cell phones, how the he!! did we survive? Did we wait until we got to our destination or got home to call someone or check the answering machine for calls. We are self destructing. Ahhhhh, rant over.

You are probably right. Doing nothing is a much better solution to this deadly problem.

No need to take a back handed swipe at me. Passing a law is NOT doing something UNLESS the law is enforced. In most places it is not enforced... as a guy that rides a motorcycle my life is in even more danger, than those driving cars, by texting idiots.

My guess is that if I were physically standing in front of you that back handed swipe would have never happened.

Mikekoz is right - the laws are passed, but not enforced, so they're useless until something really bad happens.

I live in the most crowded state in the nation.  Use of handheld cellphones while driving any vehicle is prohibited by law.  Want to know how many close calls I had because of some idiot talking on a handheld or texting or checking e-mails?  I've lost count.  The law is so routinely and widely violated that the state and local police couldn't possibly stop all the violators.

A German friend of mine suggested that the law needs to have real teeth.  His solution: your auto / motorcycle insurance is null and void if you are in an accident while using a cell phone.  You bear the full risk financially as well as on your conscience.

A lot of Filipinos are guilty of texting while driving or riding a motorbike. It is a good thing that the law against it is now being enforced and has stiff penalties.
