uwm, I had an android based phone, it was preety cool and interesting. All the apps I needed were just one tap away.
The battery life will kill you, though.
The thing about iPhone is that if you drop it on the floor, you're doomed. and it's preety expensive ( no to mention that iphone 5 is its way to the market ) :)
be who you are, say what you feel, because those who matter don't mind, and those who mind don't matter

I don't do smart phones. Too expensive, too small to see the display, too small to type on the keyboard.

but I do have an Android tablet and it does everything that we'd like it to do.  And the price is much better than the Apple equipment.

Motorola Razr--great phone, large screen, 4g--fast.  I've been amazed how much I can do from my phone and almost everyday I find more uses for it.  Wouldn't be without one--the company BB sits in a drawer with phone forwarded--too slow, small screen, can't do much by comparison.

Android user here... Being somewhat of a "Techie", I like the fact that androis OS is open source. Easier to Root/MOD android vs. Jailbreak the I-phone. Granted, the I-phones/pads are nice, never really wanted to fork over the coin.

Cheers,
Ro

I have the iPhone 4

What I like:

- Easy to use - virtually everything done with touch screen icons
- Reliable - never freezes, crashes. Rarely throws up random error messages
- Great with Skype
- Easy to sync contacts and email right across all of my devices
- Practically impossible to loose data
- iMessage service with other iPhone users
- Holds its value - has good resale value

What I don't like:
- Overpriced
- Locked into Apple products
- Inflexible iTunes service

Hello fellow chrome domes:

Just wanted 2 say thanks for all your responses...it was a tough choice but I ended up re-signing with Sprint and I went w/ the Android.  It's a Samsung Galaxy 2.  I can't seem 2 keep my hands off of it. :/O  It's a fun phone indeed. O0

I've heard good reports about Samsung and Android.

Just of interest what kind of monthly contract rates do you pay in the States.

Here in the UK, expect to pay £45 / $60 per month for an iPhone. For that you get plenty of internet, unlimited internet and 600 minutes of calls to other networks and landlines.

Remember the key difference between the UK and US. In the UK, all UK mobile numbers do not have area codes. So when a person in the UK calls a mobile, they know they are calling a mobile and pay more. UK mobile users do not pay to receive incoming calls.

I think you'll really get very comfortable in the "Droid" format.  It's very flexible.  My wife got the iPhone, and she's very happy with it--both of us are finding that they are extremely useful.  over all I'd have to say the iPhone can be a little easier to operate and I like the idea of photos going to the computer--although we can't do that since we don't have an apple laptop or desktop unit.  I do like the bigger screen on my Razr, but I saw where the new iPhone may be moving up too.  It's a trade off between size and ease of viewing.  In a restaurant obsessed area like we have here in the Crescent City, the Open Table app has saved us a lot of calling around if we decide just to go out on the spur of the moment.  Funny, one of my wife's biggest uses is swapping pictures of grandchildren with her friends.  I'm amazed how quick she picked that up.  She's also moved into texting big time, never saw that coming from a woman who used to long for dial phones!
It'll be interesting to see what improvements will be available say 5 years down the road.

Maybe I'm finally getting old but the way people obsess about their smartphones is quickly becoming a pet peeve of mine.  I had a Samsung smartphone around 2009 and 2010 and had a terrible experience: the phone's features were poorly designed (i.e. it allowed you to make notes, but they were limited to 256 characters and 9, yes 9, in total on the phone), highly buggy (the calendar was severely screwed up), or both.

Two years ago I downgraded to a POS MetroPCS phone for $70 and I'm basically happy with it and its scratched up screen (more later).

Why I hate Smartphones:

1) Phones are highly vulnerable to loss, theft, and damage and smartphones are especially vulnerable.  When I had that Smartphone I kinda lived in fear of that without really noticing.  With this cheap Metro phone I have literally (gently) pitched it on the floor to demonstrate its durability, and if it does need replaced?  $70.  I actually feel free-er at this point.  I feel like I can walk next to a swimming pool without being a step away from losing $600.

2) I'm not tied to a contract that subsidizes the cost of a handheld laptop computer.  If I want to leave I can do it.

3) My bill is $53 a month for unlimited talk, text, and data.  That's $53 exact.  When I was with Sprint I had more expensive plans and the 20% or so of miscellaneous fees and taxes that you don't find out about until bill time.  Even without overage my Sprint bill still mysteriously varied every month.

4) I don't live in fear of data overages.  Smartphones have a voracious appetite for data, use data for surprising reasons, and you have no way of monitoring it.  At least with AT&T, data usage figures are only estimates: how the hell can this figure not be exact down to the byte?  You cannot set your phone to stop when it hits your plan limit either, and it will plow right on gobbling up pricy overage data.  Cellphone companies keep making data plans more and more expensive while encouraging the use of data-intensive features.  Using Netflix or Pandora on a cellphone data plan is akin to utter madness, yet the commercials push the use of those kinds of features.  Did you know that cellphones will continue to use cellular data even when on Wifi?  Data-intense features like Pandora will continue to drain your data plan even if you are on wifi!  Did you know that?

Why I want another Smartphone:

I will admit that I do wish I had a full keyboard for texting and a screen that will allow me to play Temple Run and Angry Birds, but that's it.  I will probably get a basic smartphone when this phone dies but it will be a cheap one with a cheap Metro PCS (or similar) service.  I do not need screaming fast data (and really, few actually do) and I couldn't care less about strutting around with my chest puffed out because I got a second mortgage on my house for the honor of having the latest Samsung Galaxy or iPhone.  My phone's main flaws is that it's time consuming to text and provides no mindless entertainment when I am stuck at a doctor's office aside from a timed trial of UNO.
You don't know me, but I know you.

Same exact reason I left Verizon... I'm currently w/Cricket and have no complaints. Yes, I have a smartphone...however, I'm not tied to a contract and I'm not paying an outrageous phone bill. I'm not going to say how much (close to a car note... LOL!) I was paying for 3 smartphones w/Verizon but w/Cricket I'm shelling out $160,for 3 android phones w/unlimited data, talk and text.... YMMV

Cheers,
Ro
