Bald with glasses

I agree. Contacts allow a wider range of vision and I wear them whenever possible.

I started wearing glasses 4 years ago. Typical middle age stuff. Adjusting to a reduced range of vision was the tricky part, and why I occasionally consider contact lenses.

Now Razor X, have you considered thick black plastic frames ? Seem to think they go well with the a bald head. They might do with you.

No, I always thought they might be too overwhelming.  Plus they would bring back some unpleasant childhood memories. It isn't easy being the only kid in class with glasses.

Could be worse....you could be the only bald kid in class because your dad shaved your head as punishment...happened to a classmate of mine in sixth grade....on the day we took yearbook pictures!

Sounds like his dad needed to brush up on the parenting skills.  That's a lousy thing to do a kid.   Bald with glasses I can deal with now, but at age 12 it would have been a huge source of humiliation.

I like the look of your eye glasses. I wear thin framed glasses myself. I like them because they are light weight. I tried contacts awhile back but they did not work out too well because of my astigmatism.

I do agree that no 12 year old should have to go through that against his will....However, he was the class bully and one day the principal reported this to the parents so I guess it may have been karma, but still wrong....I guess daddy wanted to teach him a lesson, though there were better alternatives. FWIW, he was a good sport about it but he got teased, and after his hair grew back, he changed...BTW, I ran into this guy in February, and we had a good laugh (We're both sly now, BTW) Thinking back, I was experimenting with dad's clippers in 8th grade and was forced to shave it all off because I made a mistake.  I was grounded for two weeks, I think I would have rathered the belt whipping myself

The only way you are going to see my face without a beard is if I have surgery and they have to shave it off, or if it fall out naturally.  I seriously doubt that I would voluntarily shave my beard.  It's just part of me.

I totally agree. I shaved my beard into a van dyke a few months ago, and although I enjoyed it, went back to being bearded. Curiously, I have no problem passing a razor to my head, but I have a problem passing a razor to my face.

Onto the topic, I'm a combination glasses/contact lens wearer. Oddly, I found myself gravitating toward contact lens more with the bald/beard look. I don't know why, but I feel awkward with the glasses on then. During the van dyke period mentioned earlier, I wore my glasses more often. I have a pair of these:



I may post a picture of myself with them on. Come to think of it, I had a difficult time transitioning from my old glasses to these when I bought them in 2008.

Last week, had my eye test. Finally caved in and opted for varifocals: for distance and reading in one frame. Bit apprehensive - never worn varifocals.

Chosen ray-ban black frames - like to think they suit my bald and beard face.

Will collect new glasses around Sat 2 March. So I'll update my profile pic.

That was my thinking, Tom.

They weren't cheap. But I'll be wearing most of the time and I paid a bit extra for those transitional lenses which go dark in daylight. Got them on my current pair - a feature which I rather like.

I have the transitional lenses which go from clear to dark grey in the sun.  They work well, but there are two drawbacks: 1) they don't darken in a car - car windshields block the UV rays needed to cause the darkening, and 2) cold weather slows the process.  The latter is noticeable when you come inside after being out in the cold for a while.  The lenses stay dark for a longer period than you would expect.  Other than that, I like them.

Funny you should say that - I know somebody else who says exactly the same thing, as you ! Don't drive myself, so don't notice that drawback.

Agree with you - they take ages to go back to normal when coming indoors. Still, other than that, I do like transition lenses.

Agreed! I'm a huge fan of my Ray-Ban Clubmasters (seen in my profile picture). I chose them specifically when I was thinking about going with the shaved head. I like these particular frames because they're very much of a 40s-50s-60s style that is really coming back right now (in large part due to Mad Men fame).
