The application of shaving oil has been part of my shaving routine from year dot, but living on the other side of the pond i prefer kos kintexium shaving oil, this has without doubt got to be the best shaving oil on the market, dont get this oil confused with there standard alpha shaving oil, the kintexium oil is in a different ball park, two squirts from the spray bottle applied to a wet head followed by a application of the gell of your choice and you are ready for one slick shave with NO IRRITATION. i have tried shave secret and it comes nowhere near the kintexium. I've been using a light oil, with my ol' trusty Barbasol for a few years now.  I try to use it every time I shave, but sometimes get a bit lazy and, just lather up, but when I use the oil, it does allow the Headblade to glide more easily.   I use the CVS oil, a knockoff of the more expensive Neutragena body oil.  Personally, I think the CVS oil is lighter, thinner, and about $4 to $5 less than the Neutragena oil.  Smells nice too, (especially when the bride applies it to my 'bod', best when it is warmed, but that topic is foder for another thread.)
Earlier someone said they use baby oil,  and yes, while inexpensive, it is nothing more than mineral oil with 'Johnson baby butt' smell added.  And Mineral oil is less expensive than baby oil.   I would suggest that if you want to try an oil, give the CVS oil a try.   If ya don't like it, well, as mentioned above, there are alternative uses.   The wife likes it too,  in her bath, and, uhh, umm, applied by a willing partner.   ^-^

The two best shaving oils that I've used are Pacific Shaving Oil (http://www.pacificshaving.com) and Bald Style (http://www.baldstyle.com)

I used baby oil today when I shaved...actually got a closer shave and a shinier dome without having to shave over a second time like in the past....Maybe the guy who said baby oil is onto something...

I tried using baby oil for a few weeks when I first began shaving. It helped with taming irritation, but I found that the oil and shaving cream really clogged my razor. After a few weeks, I stopped using oil and still got a smooth shave without irritation. I think my scalp toughened up enough.

Baby oil is pretty amazing, particularly the kind, Johnsons I think, that has some aloe added.  The price is unbeatable.  I still also use Shave Secret, about $2.35 at Wal-Mart.  Oil under the HS applied with a brush is a great way to a baby butt smooth peeled peach.
