My iPod died

My iPod classic, which is almost four years old, just died suddenly. I was listening to it in the car on the way to the gym, and everything was fine. When I returned to the car after my workout, it was completely dead and nonresponsive. It won't work in a docking station nor does it respond when I hook it up to my PC. I certainly didn't expect it to last forever, but I always thought that the battery would slowly degrade and fail to hold a charge. I didn't expect it to go without warning. Anybody else ever have this happen?

I have a 30gb iPod Video which I think is similar to the Classic? Something similar happened to mine. I thought it was totally dead. It wouldnt charge, wouldnt turn on, nothing. I took it to my nearest Apple store and they ran some diagnostics, did a reset, and mailed it back to me, and it worked perfectly after that. They didnt tell me exactly what they did, but they did bring it back from the 'dead'. I only use my iPod Touch now, and my iPhone, but I know the 30gb still works ok because I charge it once in a while to keep it alive. I've had mine for at least 8 years, maybe even a little longer

Daughter had that happen. It LOOKED locked up, but there is a sequence which resets things and it works again. I think you hold the start button for like 12 seconds or something like that which does the reset. I googled something like frozen or non-responsive iPad and found the instructions.

You hold the centre (center) button in and also the bottom of the wheel, but that only temporarily resets it. He might need a software update or overhaul or wtf its called

The button thing is certainly worth a try though

The iPods sometimes need to be reset - it's not the battery, it's the software itself. The old ones sometimes gave an icon that looked like a sick iPod. There is a sequence of steps that reset it. I forget what they are, but an Apple store could do it.

I tried that already. I'm at the Apple store now waiting for my appointment. OMG, what a madhouse!

They're always crazy. Just stand at the Genius Bar and start crying. They'll take pity on you

Well, that was an experience. I didn't know where the store even was, so I looked it up on their website before I left. I knew the address was near the local mall. I got to the mall and drove up and down the highway a couple of times looking for it to no avail. I tried the maps function on my phone but it didn't give me enough detail to find it. I called the store and the automated answering system gave some rudimentary directions and named two other stores it was next to, neither of which I could find. I finally pulled into the mall parking lot and called again and waited to get in touch with a live person. It was then they told me they were inside the mall. I asked them why they didn't just say so on their directions, it would have made things a lot simpler. "We can't do that," they replied. "Why not?" I asked. "Because no store ever says they're inside the mall when they're giving directions." "Why not?" I asked again but by then I knew I was beating a dead horse.

As for the iPod, it turns out to be a part that went bad. They said they could order a new part and have it fixed in a couple of days for $60. I thought about it and opted to buy a new one because the battery is also starting to go. That would be another so between the two, that's half the price of a whole new device. The old 80GB one was nearing capacity anyway. They gave me 10% off for trading it in and in the end it was only $5 more than it would have cost to buy one online from Amazon.

It's strange that they don't list the fact that they're in the mall. The one near me is the same - just lists the road name. It's always crowded too eventhough they doubled the size of the place about two years ago.
Sorry that your iPod met its end. The newer ones are better on battery life and some features. I've got a Nano that I use at the gym. The only drawback to it is that I have big fingers and the touchscreen is small.

I'm a total Apple freak. iMac, iPad (x2), iPhone, iPod Touch, iPod Video, Macbook Air... its no wonder I'm broke.

I really didn't expect it to be that crowded on the first Sunday afternoon of football season, especially after 4 pm.
I looked at the iPod touch and they are neat but don't hold anything even close to what I need. I have my entire music collection, with just a few exceptions, on my iPod and was getting close to reaching my old one's capacity of 80GB.

And analysts predicted that the Apple retail stores would be a flop...
There are two here in Austin and they're both crazy busy no matter what time of day you go.
When I was in Vegas last March, I visited the Apple Store in the Forum Shops at Caesar's. At 2AM. And it was crazy busy. (Of course, in Vegas I don't think anyone ever sleeps.)

No matter when I try the Apple store, it's a zoo.
I have two iPods - a classic and a Nano. I've been converting everything over slowly (I get sidetracked with other things) so I'm sure I'll face the same problem you had with space.

My nearest Apple store is about an hour away, and you cant just turn up. You have to make an appointment. I suppose it makes sense because they're always packed with people and without an appointment you sometimes cant even get inside the front door.
