Mirrors?
« on: July 12, 2011, 09:33:20 AM »
Been shaving my head for a week now. I've learned a good deal here, and each shave seems a bit better than the last. I'm shaving daily.

Only problem is how to view the back of my head. I am doing it by feel, but I would be more comfortable if I could see it. Any suggestions?

You can get a hand held mirror and hold it behind, the only problem is that now your hand isn't free to do other things, like feel for stubble.  Take it slow and give it time and it will start to become second nature.

The best approach is todo it by feel - getting  a mirror involved in the back just invites trouble. Plus your fingertips are much more sensitive for finding missed spots than your eyes will.  You'll also be fighting with fog, slippery/soapy hands and, I'll almost guarantee, more cuts and knicks.

Working by feel you're paying more attention to what you're doing - not dividing it withwhat you;re seeing.

The only time I use a mirror is to take a look at my finished handywork!

Doing it by feel is better and faster in my experience.  Your free hand can lead and feel for missed spots and stubble.

Like Sailor, I only use the mirror afterward to look at the smooth dome!

OK, I'm getting better and can do my head start to finish by feel.  Been shaving it morning and evening as well, since I like the smoooooooothness. O0

Shaving twice a day?  You're addicted to the smooth feel like many of us are!

A minion shaves the back of my head.  Then I execute him, since I don't want anyone who has a razor in hand to get too familiar with my neck.

This use of serial slaves might be a little difficult to effect for those who are not absolute autocrats.  For the minionless, I advise a hand mirror to scope out the invisible realm, and let the other hand shave the areas yet white with foam.  Then put the mirror down, use the free hand to feel for less smooth areas, and re-shave as needed, or as much as you can put up with until you say, "To hell with it.  This is good enough."

Ming recommends a touch of Head Lube Glossy, after.

My Imperial Standards of glisten and slick are more demanding than most, however.

I have to used 2 mirrors as I do not have feeling im hands as much as used too story for later. Any how I shaved my head for the first time in a while a few days ago and got careless nicked my ear. I shave at the sink and have a mirror behind me on the wall I can adjust the angle. With it being above 100 deg in Oklahoma it feels good.

No mirrors here either. It just means one more thing to juggle and an opportunity for cuts if anything slips. Going by feel allows you to focus on the patches more. Just take your time as you get used to it. My routine is getting a little shorter but I still take plenty of time to get smooth but not cut myself. Sounds like you are getting it down though. Good luck

I prefer shaving at the sink with the mirror.  tried shaving in the shower, it just does not work for me.

As for the back of my head, I shave one stroke, and feel with my free fingers.  Shave - feel, shave - feel...It works like a dream.

Once in a while when I spend the night at my aunt's house in the city....she has a three mirror medicine cabinet that I can fold the two outside doors and have the perfect view of the back of my head and still keep both hands free....Otherwise, like the others, I just do it by feel and use a hand mirror to see the end result.

Shave by feel in the shower here, can't beat it IMO. I used to use a handheld mirror, held in front of me with the bathroom mirror behind me.

I do my head in the shower all by feel, then do my face at the sink and do any touch ups I might miss at the mirror so I can actually see them.
