DE/Safety Razor question
« on: February 16, 2011, 07:35:22 PM »
I was wondering if anyone has a recommendation for a good DE/safety razor. I've never used one but have become intrigued with the idea of these for the face and possibly the head after a little practice. I've looked around a little on the internet and there are a ton of choices but what is a good one for a newbie and is there one thats good for face and head, or would I need to look into a certain type for each? Any info on this and any tips on their use would be great! Thanks!!!!    :)

personally i use a merkur classic 45 when i dont have time to use the straight, also have merkur futur that i was given as a gift (not too fond of it) as far as DE's go i would start out with something fairly reasonable to start as ive found over the years with DE's the trick to getting a great shave with them is not all to do with the razor itself, but a combo of the right blades, right technique and the right prep.

why not look up:

-Gillette Tech
-Gillette Superspeed
-Merkur HD
-Merkur Classic or 1904

All good and quite reasonable

Merkur 34c or 38c if you like a longer handle, feather blades aswell. Take it slow, or you WILL nick yourself!

I am in the same boat as you Nate 13.  There are so many DE's to choose from and you obviously want to "make the best buy possible" for an item you are going to pay a lot of money for, especially when you have to pay import taxes.  I have been reading reviews on othere sites about DE's and I am left "spoiled for choice".  However, I will have to make up my mind.  In the mean time, my trusty little "Lion" will have to continue doing the job.
