Bumps, dangit!
« on: September 23, 2010, 10:12:58 AM »
The bump thing is getting crazy. I'm committed to going sly but the bumps are kinda undermining the confidence factor right now.

My technique is getting better with the HB and I like the ease of use, particularly on the back of the head. I tried an Atra Plus blade today and it seemed fine. I'm wondering if the HeadSlick is causing this. I'm a pretty allergic guy with sensitive skin. The bumps are worst where my hair is thickest and even going WTG doesn't seem to make a difference.

Maybe I should go to every other day until things calm down. I don't like the stubble but I like the pepperoni pizza look even less. Drat! I want to be smooth every day!

Just had to vent a little.

Thanks fellas.

Maybe you should try an electric razor?  I know a lot of the guys around here like a certain one, I believe it is a Panasonic model.  I have

I use an electric on my face because if I use a razor, I get bumps and cut my self, even if I am careful and go with the grain.  The great thing about electric razors are that you can use them daily with no problem and some people even use them twice a day.

I haven't completely shaved my head yet (still sporting the no guard buzzed look) but when I do, I will start off with an electric.  Sensitive skin is sensitive skin and maybe the razor is too harsh for your dome right now.

Or maybe the every-other-day shave will work.  It seems like a lot of guys do that because their domes can't take an everyday shave.

Try a good exfoliant before your shave and an astringent afterwards.

I personally like an alcohol-free witch hazel astringent.  PM me and I'll send you my full shave regimen with product names.

People with bumps have written us lauding the Bald Guyz regimen. Daily Wash & Shampoo; Pre-Shave Scrub; Shave Gel and Moisture Gel after. The intense moisturizers in our products help prevent bumps and quicken their disappearance.

Try seeing a dermatologist if it doesn't clear up.  I had a very persistent bump problem.  I went to one dermatologist who was no help at all and spent the better part of a year trying to clear it up on my own before throwing in the towel and finding another doctor.  It turns out that I have rosacea . Once that was determined, the doctor was able to prescribe some things that have pretty much cleared it up.

I rub baby oil all over my head, then wash my head with shampoo and conditioner. I'll shave my head, but use women's shaving cream, with my headblade, my wife's gillette venus, or triple blade women's razor I get at the dollar tree. The razors at the Dollar Tree I get for. They are 3 for $1.
That usually prevents in bumps and razor burn with my sensitive skin. I used to get bumps and razor burn really bad, until I found the right combination. My cartridge on my headblade is on backwards, because if I put it on the correct way, I'll get bumps and razorburn.
After shaving I'll use a facial mask with lavender oil on my face and head to sooth any irritation, but usually have very little irritation. It also makes the skin on my bald head feel soft and smooth. This is also found at the dollar tree, in a purple squeeze tube, for $1

It may be repetitive, but since you say it's worse where the remaining hair is the thickest it could have to do with oils and dirt blocking the follicles.  Two things, scrub w/ a loofah sponge pad and keep it clean--wash the dome with mild anti-bacterial or anti-acne soaps like Cuticura or Neutrogena daily, including when you get home from work.  And, change your pillowcase a couple a times a week.  Keeping it clean often goes a long way to keeping it clear.

Thanks, guys! Lots of great suggestions. I'm definitely washing more. I've been using Oxy sometimes followed by some hydrocortisone cream (Saint was that you who suggested that somewhere?). I'm not even at two weeks yet, but at the moment it seems like the main culprit was shaving ATG. I've really been conscientious about not doing that and the difference is noticeable. I've messed around with different razors and products and at the moment I'm gravitating towards the HB with Atra Plus and HeadSlick. I seem to get the smoothest WTG shave with that combo. Also been checking out Bump Patrol and I think it helps but again, I think shaving only WTG is more significant. Some of what I have on my head is allergy-based; it was there underneath the hair. I'm like stupidly allergic to airborne allergens. I can get hives from a high mold count. So now that the dome is exposed, I'm even more vulnerable. I ain't gonna let it stop me though. The Slyness is just too freakin' cool!

That makes me think a benadryl cream might help--worth a couple of bucks to try it.
