Stevie Ray Vaughan died 20 years ago today, RIP
« on: August 27, 2010, 09:30:54 PM »
Do you remember where you was 20 years ago today when you first heard that Little Stevie Ray Vaughan died? I do. I can only imagine how much better his already perfect style would be if he was still with us.

I consider his death the greatest untimely death in the history of music.

Call me young, but not a clue who he is...  :-X

the Present worse than it is & the future less resolved than it will be.

That is no excuse, I wasn't born before Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart died, but I know his music quite well. ;)

Makes me wonder if I will ever see the day when more current musicians like Stevie Ray will be talked about in classrooms alongside earlier greats like Mozart.  Only time will tell.

SRV def had a style all his own!!

Kenny, you need to check him out.  I honestly don't have any of his music in my collection, but I am very familiar with it -- he was indeed a guitar STUD.  And I do remember where I was when I heard of his untimely death.
How is that Hopey / Changey thing working for you?

Anyone who has been on this Forum any amount of time knows that SRV is my favorite artist ever. He is constantly loaded into/onto every music device I own.

His music is timeless and could be released today and be hits. His hero growing up was Jimi Hendrix. He is probably one of the most under rated musical talents ever.

A perfect day for me? A comfy chair in the shade of a big tree, a cooler of cold beer next to the chair, and SRV and Joe Cocker playing on the MP3 player.

Kevin-

you should check him out thoroughly. EVen if you don't care for his music, you should be able to really appreciate it.

To me, it's a shame that a guy like SRV gets little to no play on popular radio but every non talented hip-hop artist that doesn't even know how to hold an instrument can get rich.

Again, to me, the measure of an artist is his staying power with the masses.... I always tell my soon, "In 20 years almost nobody will even remember (enter hip-hop artist name here)."

Staying power??? How about Elvis, Frank Sinatra, The Stones, Led Zeppilin, SRV.... I could go on. I'm not a fan of all these artists but I appreciate the talents and timelessness of all of them.

I can't get the video to embed so...here's the link.  SRV and Double Trouble, "Little Wing."  I'll take his version over Jimi's any day.  I was sitting in my office on duty when they announced it on the radio.  The DJ was/is a friend of mine to this day.  He played Little Wing.

Every now and then I try to listen to Top 40 just to see what the kids are listening to, and it's kind of depressing.  If I hear one more song done in iambic pentameter, and what the HELL is with all the songs that sound like a three minute commercial for binge drinking?

Sounds nice, I could totally hang out with you.
SRV was highly respected by his peers and even those that he idolized. He was looking up to folks like BB King and Buddy Guy and they were looking to him to continue the torch, little did they know...
