Get a good hat and sun screen!!!
« on: August 20, 2010, 03:43:33 PM »
Fellows, I have had some lesions cut off the scalp and face before, but have never had a "bump" come up out of no where and become a monster in 3 weeks.  Just got back from the dermatologist and had a squamous cell lesion cut off....with another procedure to come next week.  Caught it really early, so there will be no problems, but I just wanted to shout out that the sun can get you!!!  You younger guys, watch out and protect yourselves NOW so you won't have to deal with this mess 30 years from now.  The sucker looked just like a pimple---thought it was nothing---then I realized this thing isn't going away....actually growing everyday!  4 more places were frozen off.

Check yourselves, my brothers, and protect yourselves!!!   A nice, big hat is stylish.

Welcome to the club, a club no one wants to join.  Squamous cell and basal cell here, a total of more than 10 :(.  At least it wasn't hidden under a combover and aggravated by hair spray.  I honestly believe that had I shaved it down when the mpb started and used sunscreen, I probably won't have had a problem since unprotected exposure to sun is the primary cause.  Since going sly I've never had a sun problem--used to get red in the sparse areas a lot.  Glad you caught it.

Proof positive that you can't be too careful.

Glad you caught it, Reb.

Thanks so much for the well wishes, guys!!  I completely agree with saintc regarding the comb over deal....If I had not gone SLY, I probably would not have noticed that lesion until it was a bad, bad dude and a lot more to worry about!  Again, thanks, guys! O0

Hey, all the best to you.  I seldom wear sunscreen as I am trying to even out my color as much as possible, but I may be changing my opinion on that soon.

Hey folks, just an update on the squamous cell cancer that was cut off of me.  My dermatologist had thought we could do a pretty "simple" frozen section procedure, but after getting the lab reports back, he said "I'd be happier" if you went the Mohrs Procedure route.  Set me up with another specialist to do a microsurgery where the cancer cells are taken out, under the use of a microscope, layer by layer...leaving the un-affected cells alone.  Seems some lesions are like ice bergs---You only see a very small amount above, or at, skin level.  Under the skin, it can be deep and wide.

Still 100% curable and I am happy we are going this route.  Sun damage did most of this to me, but squamous cell cancer also comes from radiation---I have been in the radiology field for 30 years.  One of the specialists came out and said---Use Neutrogena Age Shield Face...SPF70 with helioplex.  Just a little info I wanted to pass along to the brotherhood!!  Guess I'll find out about Mohrs in a week or two!!  Just unreal how fast this lesion came up.  Shocking!

I've had three mohs procedures.  No big deal, except that there's a long time after they cut the site out and come back to close the wound--it's the time to do the detailed lab/microscopic work.  Other than the wait--it's a walk in the park.  Good luck.

Good call on the Neutrogena Age Shield Face - SPF70.  I use it and it works. I have a very fair complexion. The SPF70 has really saved my face and now my head from burning.

The folks from Walk for Life gave us Neutrogena samples. SPF 70 seems a good choice for your sensitive head. Even if you wear a hat outdoors, it's good to prepare for those times when it gets lost, blows away or you just leave home without it.

Saintc hit it right with the Neutrogena.....my skin doc said the same thing.......needed it yesterday.  Boat died in the Gulf while fishing and had we not had the SPF 70, I am sure we would have died.  BTW, a BP contracted boat left us to drift.  What A@@ Holes---and illegal to boot.   If I had not been a member here, I would not have known how to protect the skin......the big hat worked great!!!
