Conair Cleanhead
« on: April 11, 2010, 02:14:39 PM »
Hey guys, I'm not sure if anyone else posted this, but I just bought this new product called the Conair Cleanhead.  It basically is the first electric shaver made exclusively for the head.

I just bought it home and it has to charge for 16 hours, so after I use it tomorrow morning, I'll let you know how I like it.  I bought it for $39.00 at Sears.

Here is the link.

Walgreens has these also. I think Walgreens might be a little cheaper.

Stemy, there has been a few post on this product. Most seem to like it, and another opinion is always good to hear.Waiting to maybe getting one myself.

Hey guys, I also posted pics in another thread, but here are couple of my mug after using the conair cleanhead.

I'm running out the door now, but when I have time I'll give a more indepth product review.

For now all I'll say is it does get as close as a blade and there is a little learning curve.  There is no irritation or cuts like when I used a blade and if you are someone who wants to always keep your head bald and use it every other day, it would probably simplify your life.

I'll give you a list of pros and cons later.  Hope this helps.

Steve.

I saw these for sale in Winn Dixie in FL.  I think it was about $40.

I purchased it and I like it. I believe it is money well-spent and it is not a gimmick.  I highly encourage fellow Sly Guys to try it. It is simple to use and they claim no cuts and or irritation and that is the truth.  You just shave your head: no creams or gels or water needed

I've used the CleanHead for about five days in a row now, and I will say I was quite impressed. It was much better than a few previous head shaves with ordinary rotary or foil shavers.

First I should note that I'm a white guy with full head of thick, bristly, wavy hair. I'm prone to acne and bumps on both my face and scalp. Usually I blade shave against the grain every other day (this routine actually results in the least amount of irritation for me).

What I found is that, for me, the CleanHead was generally on par with blade shaving with the grain. For some spots on my head it wasn't as close as blade shaving, others about the same, and in one area specifically (the back, from ears down) it was even closer than a blade shaving with the grain. (I have thick "guard hair" in the back and blade shaving with the grain doesn't get that stuff smooth. The CleanHead did.)

However, as a whole, for me, it was not as close as blade shaving against the grain.

To respond to chillpil5 -- for me it visually the same as a blade shave, but it was not totally smooth in all directions. It was totally smooth in many places, though. I could start to feel stubble about two hours earlier in the day than with a blade against the grain.

The time investment was about the same -- 20 minutes to shave my head close, either with the CleanHead or with a blade. (Yes, I know some guys here think that's outrageous, but that's what it takes for my head of hair.)

Unrelated to using the CleanHead, I'll be growing my hair back right now. Next time I go sly (probably later this summer for a few months) I'll probably use the CleanHead for a while.

Sir

I believe it can give you a baby butt smooth shave but that is my opinion.  It does work and it does not cut but it does take some getting used to as ingrown hairs can happen if you shave in all directions.  You shave dry on your dome so I recommend you wash you dome first to get all of the oil and I even use a pre-elective shave solution. I like it but sometimes there is no beating the wet shaving.

I just bought one, and I have to say that I am pretty impressed. But like everything else, it has its pro's and con's.

Closeness:
First of all, it does give a very close shave, and leaves your head very smooth. I'd say that if a razor is a 10, then the CC is probably a 9 to 9.5. It takes a little getting used to, and I found that for me, it works best against the grain. They say that you should use a circular motion, but that is a little difficult sometimes, because the CC conforms to the shape of your head so well, that moving in a circular motion just doesnt feel right. I like it best just using a straight back and forth motion.
Cons: Not quite as close as a blade.
Pros: No worry about nicks, cuts, bumps.

Time:
It normally takes be about 5 minutes to shave with a blade, but it took me about 15-20 minutes to get the same feeling with the CC, because you may have to go over an area several times to get that smooth feeling. I got the best results by stretching my scalp as I went over it.
Cons: Takes 3 to 4 times as long as a blade.
Pros: No mess. No water, shaving creams, gels, etc. Can shave my head while sitting on the couch watching TV, or out on the deck, walking down the street, etc

Cost:
I dont use cheap razors. I like Quattros, Hydro 5's, Mach 5's, etc. Unfortunately, the blades for them are not cheap, and I only get a bout a week out of each blade before my shaving time starts to increase. Add in shaving creams, gels, etc, and I can easily spend anywhere from $10-$20 a month on shaving. I bought the CC for $40, so it should pay for itself in 2-4 months if I use it regularly.

Misc:
The unit overall seems a little cheaply built, but it does come with  5 year warranty. The body is all plastic, but it is shaped to fit either hand quite naturally, and the dual, angled shaving areas fit the contours of your head very nicely. The charging stand is pretty much a joke, so I just plug the charger directly into the unit. Cleaning is easy and straight forward, but you will need to clean it after every two or three shaves. To clean it, you just pull of the top, remove the shaving mechanism, brush it out with the included brush, and put it back together. The unit also comes with an adjustable trimmer attachment that allows you to vary the length of the cut, as well as comb attachments for 1/8, 1/4, and 3/8 inch length. This allows you to create close, ultra close, stubble look, etc. Also, I used the CC on my face, and got one of the best shaves I ever got from an electric razor. Since most electric razors cost $50+, this is an added bonus, and I would buy it for that purpose alone.

Overall:
A very versatile unit that allows you to get many different looks. For $40 bucks, you just cant go wrong.

Nice review jerry020653. Was you born on Feb the 6th of 1953? Just guessing. I have physic powers.

I am not one to knock a product that I haven't tried, but 20 minutes to shave seems a bit extreme to me and like a lot of wear on the poor little motor in that thing.

I have a little battery operated electric razor that I use to touch up around this mole that I have on my face. I have gotten in a habit of using the electric razor on it because I have cut it dozens of times over the year. :) I tried it on my head once but didn't care for it, but it isn't made with heads in mind. With that said I would definitely give an electric that is designed for the head a try just to see if it works any better.

I am currently enjoying blade shaving, actually enjoying it, mainly because of all the wonderful prep products, different soaps and creams, brushes, and after shave treatments I have found through this site and another forum called The Shave Den.

I may start dropping hints around Christmas for the wife. Perhaps I'll print out this review and some web ads and point it out to my wife while shopping in a store that carries it. :)

Yes, you are correct about my birth date. That's quite an amazing power you have there.

Yesterday, while walking thru the men's hair care section in SEARS, something told me to just  look down -  I did and there was the CLEAN HEAD by Conair ($39-About $43 w/tax) sitting on the shelf, just begging to be purchased!!

Since the majority of reviews I've read about this product have been very favorable, I started reading the back of the box and before I could get halfway through, I thought WTF and tossed it into my basket.

Earlier reviews found here mentioned that a full first charge ranges in the neighborhood of 16 hrs, but when I got back to the car and took a closer look@ the product, I noticed that, as these products sometimes do, that the razor still had a bit of a "factory charge" left in it. I pulled down my sunvisor mirror and went at it. Got an amazingly close shave, even with a weak battery.

As I looked up from the task at hand, I noticed a few elderly women, wandering around in the parking lot, staring at me like I'd completely lost it.  :/O  But no matter how odd that may have felt at that precise moment, the close shave that the Conair left behind made up for it.  O0

I agree- it IS the closest thing to a BLADE SHAVE - and, I might add, I think it would even be BETTER as a PREP to a BLADE SHAVE. By using the Clean Head first, your blade WON'T have to work as hard, possibly lengthening the life of your blades.

Seems it also will work great as a "quickie" when the time just isn't there to blade your head the way you normally would, or you're going straight from the office to another appointment but have no time to run home to blade ye' noggin!

All considered, I like this shaver. It's about time somebody started catering to us SLY guys.
