Names for winter head covering!!
« on: January 05, 2010, 04:02:56 PM »
Everyone seems to call it something different.  My mom called it a toboggan, I called it a beanie or just a winter cap.

I am curious as to whether it's regional, generational or just something different people simply have different names for.

What do you call it, and why?

Canadian term is toque - I shouldn't speak for my eastern countrymen, maybe they have a different term

Beannie has become very common in the last few years

I always called it a Cap.  Hat or Knit Hat.  I'm from Eastern PA, and moved to Central PA.  They have a lot of Pennsylvania Dutch influence and they have different names for things and ways of talking.  It's really interesting to me how diverse language can be.

Heard it called a stocking cap, watch cap, and  just plain old knit cap here in Northern Illinois

I've always heard it called a tobaggan here in the south...right now I call it....ANYTHING to keep my frigging head warm!!!! Man..and I thought I lived in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina!
Our country demands all our strength, all our energies. To resist the powerful combination now forming against us will require every man at his place. If victorious we will have everything to hope for in the future. If defeated, nothing will be left for us to live for.

You're  colder than we got and you're on the water.  Hope you didn't get any frozen pipes.  They're saying it could be 18 in the City this weekend.  That could take a toll on the citrus in the yard and the landscaping generally.  This is the coldest weather we've had in something like 15 years!  I dread my utility bill--the heat is running constantly, almost like a/c in the summer.

Well there are different terms for different styles. The old fashioned ones like grandma made are stocking caps or knit caps. The normal ones are beanies. Then skullys are 2 different things depending on who you talk to, one is the beanie with no brim and the other is a spandex style that is super warm.
