Thinking about it
« on: November 19, 2009, 03:38:21 PM »

Hi everybody!
First i'd like to apologize in advance for the English mistakes i may make as it's not my native tongue. But as SBG is the best forum about baldness that i found on the internet, i think it's worth shaking a little the language barrier  :px
As you could guess from my pseudo, my name is Philip, i'm French and 24 yo (if you need any advice on how to cook frog legs, let me know  ;D).
I started losing my hair when i was 20, but until i was 22 it remained a slow process so it wasn't really a problem. Then over the last two years the hariloss accelerated and as of now, my hairline is fucked up and the top of my scalp is clearly thinning.
I know that eventually i'll be bald and as others pointed out on various threads, i think it's much better to give mother nature (the bi**h that she is :D) a little help and blow the final whistle, rather than agonizing over the hair vanishing strand by strand.
The key factor being: guts !!
I'm also a little concerned about the initial shock of my family and friends.
Anyway, my agenda is clearly pushing for at least a buzz cut, given that i'll be spending Christmas and New year eve in the Carribbean, which is to say i'll be spending one third of the daytime in the pool, one other third in the ocean and the remaining one on a lounge chair drinking rhum  ;D

Thus the whole idea involves a lot of wet hair, which is to the MPB guy what a cleaning bath is for a dog: a pain in the ass. I definitely do not want what looks like a forthcoming good time to be ruined over something trivial like hair. I figure it's a good occasion to harden up and get a grip on events.
What are your thoughts, guys? I'm curious to read you, cause you seem like a bunch of cool and down to earth people with valuable insight.
Did it take you long to get used to the new you?
Was the first thing that crossed your mind when you looked at your buzzed/shaved nogging in the mirror "good move"?
Best wishes guys and thanks for running this nice place.

Welcome to the Forum Philip! Very nice introduction and your English is very good.

Take advantage of the Holiday travel to go ahead and buzz that hair down..... as you said, it will solve the prblem of worrying about your hair when it gets wet.
As far as Family and friends reactions...... it will be an adjustment for most of them but remember.....it's your life and somethings have to be about what you want, not what others may want.

I loved my shaved head immediately.... I had been wearing a buzz for about 7 years and one day just did it. Everybody said I look better. Once you experience that SLYness..... and give it a chance..... you'll probably be hooked.

Good luck and please feel free to ask us anything.........

Like Koz said, buzz it down or even shave it for your trip.  I'd suggest shaving it as it will grow out while you're on vacation.  Plus, it will be easier to apply sunscreen if it's shaved.  You'll love being bald and being in the water!

I have an idea! Maybe just bizz it down short (maybe a #2) now and when people ask, tell them its for the trip, you dont want to be all hot from the hair. Keep it buzzed short and when you get ready to leave for the trip or when you get there, go smooth.

Welcome to the forum, Philip. Listen to the guys. Shave your head. It's the perfect time to get used to it while you are away. You will have such a great time while you are in the Caribbean, you will be bursting with confidence when you return home. Friends and family will be surprised for sure, but I think you will be surprised at the positive comments you'll get. Oh .... but you must post photos from the Caribbean. Yeah ... your newly shaved head I guess ... but more importantly ... photos of the bikini babes you'll no doubt attract.  ;D

Hey! Thanks for the kind answers, it's much appreciated  :)
I know that it's the right move, i don't think i've ever been deluding myself thinking that i look good with a poor head of hair.
As a matter of fact, i've a little story: in France, the star TV anchor, kinda like the French Larry King, is well known, and little mocked besides, for his hair transplants and poorly styled hair, and i can perfectly recall that once when i was about 10 yo i said "he'd better shave it off"! And now, present time, i'm telling myself "ok, will you live up to the word of that little brat?" lol.
So it's mostly a matter of collecting enough guts and willpower.
Hopefully it wont be too long before i truly deserve the induction ceremony to the mean looking/sweet hearted brotherood of Slymen  :px
And Ozzie, if i pull it off *knocks on wood*, you'll most definitely get the pics, including the hot babes *double knock on wood* ;D

I started losing my hair around 25.  I was self conscious of standing under lights, or letting people see the top of my head.  I didn't want anyone to notice I was going bald.  But I was.  So I had a week vacation from my job and shaved it.  When you come back from your vacation, people will not have seen you in a long time and it won't be such a shock for them to see your new style.  After a day or two nobody will even notice.

In my opinion nothing is worse or more embarrassing than a man who is self conscious & worries & cries about his thinning hair like a baby.  A real man doesn't care about somehting as trivial as hair.  That's what women do.  So I say you should go for it and beat mother nature to the punch.

By the way the ladies who knew me with hair and now shaved all tell me they like me better sly and bald.

A vacation is always an ideal time to try shaving your head for the first time -- especially when you're going to a warm climate and spending a lot of time in the pool.  Go for it.

Welcome and hello, Philip!

I think you got very good advices.
Take a clippe, buzz your hair down and in your vacation you can shave.
Best wishes and nice vacations and don't forget the pics.

Hi everybody!
I did some speleology to find the thread i had initiated a few months ago.
I just buzzed my hair all around 3 mm. It's quite a change but i think it suits me ok.
The first thing that stroke me is how cool it is when you're walking down the street and a little breeze refreshes your head!
Anyway i owe you a thanks because this forum played its part in convincing me to go for it.
