Blocking FB on work computers...
« on: November 05, 2009, 02:04:01 PM »
I have been hearing more and more about places of employment blocking the use of FB on work computers.   I just sit here and wonder why?  OK they block it so that their employees do not waste time on the computer when they should be doing work....correct?  Well what is that going to help?  To me they would just spend that time else where on the computer.   Why just target FB...why not block the whole internet connection?  What is so different about FB from any thing else?

Many companies are blocking FB as well as lots of websites.   The client I'm working for now blocks almost everything.   In fact, I'm unable to get to many work-related sites.

my previous employer had a similar policy, they wanted everything blocked except a board-approved list of work related sites.  As the system admin I took a lot of daily grief for that policy.  Their official reasoning was to limit legal liability and also to limit instances of trade secret violations.

When I worked at The Evil Bank, access to most of the web was denied across the board. Thing is, I'm a web developer.

Hmmm, deny the Web to your web developers. Good plan!  :/O

Where I work they do block the Facebooks and Myspaces of the world..... but we pretty much have access to most of the web.
There is some implicit trust involved..... they look at us as professionals, expect a certain level of honesty and good hard work, and in exchange allow use of the web.

DOn't get me wrong.... there are abusers. They call me the office linebacker at work because I'm the only guy that has the nuts to go to management when there are issues. I just went to management today because two of the other staff workers complained to me about one of the contractors surfing the web for two days straight while working 18 hours of overtime....... at $90 an hour.

Ridiculous............

I don't care if they call me a rat.....If you do your job you don't have to worry about these kinds of things. It goes back to "doing the right thing".......... something a Hell of a lot of people have trouble doing these days.

You're being paid to do a job... not f**k off and get paid.

Facebook has always been available here at the hospital until about three days ago.  I talked to my boss today and she said that she had to block it because "the other night tech" wasn't getting her work done.  To much Mafia Wars I guess.

It's their system, so I can't complain.  My only issue is I work hard and get my work done, then play.  I feel like I'm being punished for doing a good job.  Kinda sucks, but oh well.  I've got my BlackBerry!  lol  I chat with a lot of you guys at night and I miss that.  Hit me up if you're on BlackBerry!

Gents, my experience is that FB is a virtual black hole when it comes to time.  :XX Many people get "sucked into" just a comment or two and before you know it, hours have passed.  Besides, if you are "at work" doing "your job" how does FB fit into what your employer wants?   ^u!ez

Where I work, they have blocked a number of sites to include youtube, FB, and other related sites.  Unfortuneately, they have also blocked eBay after one of the purchasing folks was discovered buying and selling personal stuff on company time.  :Xo! The fix was to have a special kiosk set up where a manager can watch every move the researcher does.  It's a bit sad that many adults are treated as children because of a few bad ones, but it happens.  ~!
So, if you're looking at this during company time...GET BACK TO WORK, YOU SLACKER! :Xo!     :*)) :*))

I have a very strict web access policy.  HR can access our insurace sites, shipping some trucking companies and UPS/FedEx and that's it.  One of my designers talked me into allowing him free access and lo and behold, we started showing up on blacklisted DNS sites.  On investigation, it seems he aquired a spamming virus while cruising porn sites.

IMO, if someone needs web access for a work reason, then they can have it.  Otherwise, it's a distraction that's best removed.

FB is also banned at my company here in Oz aswell. I work for a big corporate entity here and company policy does not permit the use of social networking sites from company pc's. I don't have a problem with this, we don't get paid to poke people and update our status. Slack workers really piss me off.   :Xo!

I can understand if you work isnt getting done and they are constantly on FB and other sites.  Here in my case...there is alot of down time and it is either sit and stare out the window or surf.  As long as my work is done...there is no problem.
