First day reactions..
« on: July 02, 2009, 09:08:12 AM »
Well, I decided to shave my head today and went out shopping for a pair of shades and piercings.  I'll list the events/reactions that occured.

- At the glasses shop, the store clerks gave a bit of a flinch when I walked in (AFAIK).  They didn't seem that eager to help me until I started browsing the Ray-ban/Prada section.  That's when one walked over and helped me picked out a pair of Ray-bans.

- At the jewelry shop it was much nicer because they were all women.  I flashed a smile, they flashed a smile and even bigger when I purchased some diamond earrings.

- At work, the old manager had the look on her face as if a Nazi has just walked in.  Of course she continued to show disapproval until I finally broke down and told her the reason and that MPB was affecting me.  Even though at this stage I'm BBC; I have a lot of hair left.

- At the gym, all of the trainers pretty much ignored me.  Before they used to give some smiles and say some greetings but today, nothing.  Seemed like they were ignoring me.  All the other customers gave me side glances and finally one trainer came and talked to me.  She told me she'd like to see me grow out my nice hair again (little did she know).

In summary, not too bad.  Japanese people prefer to gossip and snicker amongst themselves instead of actually confronting someone (which is ok, keep their opinions to themselves).  But there's no doubt in my mind that they look at me and think that I'm either a bad person or just a weird person.   Normal is out of the question.  They fail to realize that if they watch American movies they can find A LOT of bald people as main cast or just background staff.   I wonder what's more "weird", someone shaving their head or eating live octopus and fish  :/O.

Guess living in a culture where being bald is less common and less accepted has it's disadvantages.  But hell, I'm all positive because I'm waiting for people who cares about me for being me, not just my head.

Ohh well, maybe not the best start but IT WILL get better. I also know for the first week or so everyone is hyper aware! There may be some that are intentionally ignoring you and such but I know that some of them are no different than ther were a week ago, you're just picking up a bad vibe that may not even be putting out!

IT WILL GET BETTER!!!

Day one had my wife and kids agree that I looked like a Cancer patient. Expletives came from all their mouths and especially my wife. I knew she was against it but her outburst had me surprised anyhow. I will say that this web site helped me prepare for this and I was not dismayed. Today is shave 3 and the dust has settled. July 4th will be a family reunion and I'm sure I will report back all the comments.  ^^32

Wow, that's a movie of my first days.  Keep the faith, remember, it's not their head, it's yours and as others have pointed out, you can just ask them, "And when was the last time you asked me if I wanted you to change your hair or get it cut?"  Only if they meet the 24/7/365 rule, can they have any meaningful comment--and you're the only one who meets it.  You might ask your contemporary relatives, "Do you really enjoy looking older than you are?  :/OWhy? :/O >:D >:D"  Unless that is, if there is an anti-fireworks law in the area.

I've been shaving my head since July of '95 and I can't tell you how tired I am of having new guys get crap from people that should be concentrating on getting their heads out of their butts.

Unless someone (especially a complete stranger) specifically mentions something about your hair/lack of hair, don't start reading into how they interact with you as being a direct result of your new found slyness.  Since it's a brand new experience to you, it's natural for you to feel like it's a brand new experience for everyone else too, but not when it comes to strangers, such as your experience shopping for new shades.  Keep the positive attitude.
How is that Hopey / Changey thing working for you?
