Finally getting it down!
« on: June 17, 2009, 04:48:09 PM »
It's been about a week or 2 since I've decided to go sly. All I can say is that not giving up has definitely paid off. Not only did any redness/dryness go away(with the help of a good shampoo and patience), but I'm starting to get to know my dome a little better, cutting down on the amount of strokes taken to get it slick. If anyone is newly sly and is getting discouraged, just keep with it. You WILL figure it out. I've still got a shadow, but it doesn't really bother me too much. It's a lot better than red spots all over my scalp. I'm also very fortunate to have a forgiving melon. I haven't cut myself yet(knock on wood) and it doesn't really get too irritated. This has definitely helped me a lot.

howdy,

I'm about 5 days into my slyness and I'm getting a bit discouraged by the cuts I'm getting.

I believe I've tried to shave once or twice dry or with minimal prep and it created some bumps.  In subsequent shaves, I cut the bumps.  it doesn't look too bad, but it hurts like a dickens.

I've also got a fairly small moll on the back of my neck that I managed to nick once.

thank god for a styptic pencil...:)

I'm not giving up though!!!

Brett

Welcome to Sly Bald Guys, Brett.  Tell us your shave routine and maybe we can offer some suggestions.

Don't worry, with time and some modification to your routine the problems will start to disappear.

well, here's it:

1.  take a shower
2.  rub neutrogina sensitive skin shaving cream on to my scalp
3.  shave with gillette fusion or mach3 razor

that's it!

I believe where I got into trouble was when i tried to rush it and just put some shaving cream on and shaved that way.

I'm definitely up for suggestions though as I really want to keep sly....

thanks!

Make sure that is a fairly long hot water soak on your scalp and try any of the shaving oils also. Apply the oil before the shaving cream. It will help GLIDE  and SLIDE the razor and gives a bit more protection from nicks.

Or plain ole baby oil. Works like a champ and the least expensive oil there is. I put baby oil then bald guyz gel on top. Leaves me nick free and smooth. It also moisturizes my noggin pretty good!

Almost any place you buy shaving products. Any large pharmacy store chains etc...
Bed Bath and Beyond is where I get my Pacific brand.
The tend to come in very small bottles. A few brand names
Pacifica - All Natural
Shave Secret (at Walmarts)
King of Shaves (KOS) has a couple of varieties.

I have experimented with olive oil which seems to work okay, but there is a little more drag, less slick like, on the blade.

You want to be sure not to use a oil that clogs pores (non comedegenic sp?), like mineral oil.

You can even use the mentioned oils alone without any shave cream. I am still experimenting a lot, but that is mostly what I do. So far I seem to like the Pacifica the most

well, I mentioned my mole that was getting in the way.

I decided, after reading lots of posts on here, to call my doc and see what he thought.

Long story short, he had an opening this afternoon.  I'm now the proud owner of a frozen mole.   @nn!3

Here's hoping that it falls off soon so I can get a good shave in that area.

Thanks again guys!

Holy Cow! The first time I tried to see my dermatologist it took me 6 weeks to get an appointment. Either you're lucky or your Derm sucks. Let's hope you're lucky!

actually, my family physician did it.  He said it was a plain old fleshy mole and he would take care of it right there.

Is first time usually the charm or do you have to repeat?
