Head Mole Removal and Scarring
« on: June 18, 2009, 02:12:43 AM »
Greetings, all!  After lurking around the forum for a few months, I have decided to step out of the shadows and seek the advice of the sages (yous guys).  So, here I go...

I am on the fast-track to slyness.  I have yet to take the plunge, but I am doing all I can to prepare myself for that epic day.  The main reason this hasn't already occurred is because, being a thoroughbred Irishman of the pasty ginger variety, I was cursed with a number of rather large, unsightly head moles (I doubt this has anything to do with being Irish, but my whole family is Irish and they all have a variety of moles).  There are four, located on the back of my head, spreading from dead-center to just behind my right ear, and one located directly on top of my noggin.  They are all basically flat, have a diameter akin to a pencil eraser, and are very dark.  I would imagine that they would show up beautifully in contrast to my perpetual paleness.  Before I free the dome from hair, I wanted to get these removed to avoid my grandmother trying to wipe chocolate spots off my head like she did when I was a baby...

So, I went to the dermatologist about two months ago for a test run, had one of the ones on the back of my head removed via the punch method.  Now there is a reddish/brownish linear scar about 0.25 inches long on the back of my head...  My concern is that, once I remove the rest, I will look like I took a shrapnel blast to the back of my head (better than chocolate, I guess...) and I will still have to be careful shaving around the scars.

So, here's my question:  Has anyone on here had a mole deliberately removed from their head and, if so, has it left a noticeable scar?  Also, by what method was the mole removed?

I would greatly appreciate any input!  Thanks!

First off CIC, welcome to the site.  We are so happy you could join our crazy family.  Let me preface my self in saying that I didn't have moles removed, but I did have hair transplants from the nape of my head to the eyebrow area.  I was born without eyebrows.  The procedure has worked fairly well.  There is a scar about three inches long.  Only one person has asked about it, so I am assuming it is not that apparent.  Any yes, it is difficult to shave around it. But I have developed a routine, or should I say, determination.  Can't stand stubble.  At any rate, I can't see the scar, so I don't really think about it.  And just to be funny, you could always lie and give them a horrible story as to why you have the scars.  Got them in the war, horrible car accident Etc. One person did ask, I told them I had a brain implant! lol  Best of luck on your decisions.
I am no better that anyone else, but by God, no one is better than I am

Welcome to Sly Bald Guys!  My advice would be to check with your dermatologist to see what he/she says about scarring.  They would know how much scarring if any there would be.
People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

I have a scar on the right side of my forehead (left side in the photo).  In this photo, you can really only see it as a vertical line where the light suddenly changes.  It used to bother me enough as a teenager that I parted my hair on the other side to hide it, but it has mellowed out since then.

A guy at church had some kind of minor accident where he was wearing a bandage smack dab in the middle of his forehead for a few weeks.  He told me he was worried about a scar forming.  I pointed out my scar, which he realized he never noticed before, and I could tell at that moment, he was not ever going to worry about his scar again.  Yes, mine isn't that hard to see, but yes, nobody really cares.

My point is we know our own blemishes and imperfections better than anybody.  (At least those of us who are single.)  Other people really don't notice or pay attention.  Moles are a pretty normal part of skin texture.  Sometimes they end up in distracting places, but I don't think you're saying yours have.

Welcome CIC.

There is a cream advertised on TV called Mederma. It is supposed to lessen the appearance of scars. I also have heard the vitamin E oil helps to reduce scars. Maybe the dermatologist can recommend something for you.

Greetings CIC,
I've been a member here for a couple of years, I just don't post often.
I've been sly for a couple of years, I had 2 moles removed when I started shaving (these were the red moles) I think they were called 'angiomas'.

one was small, the other a bit larger...
I used the mederma (sp) on the site after it healed to reduce the scarring.  As far as results... the small one you can hardly tell it was there, and the larger one; I have a little scar in the back of my head where there is no stubble..... you can use the scars as a story point for some scenario that 'scarred' :x! you... or tell the truth, when you shave you can hardly tell..  be up front with your doctor and share your plans to shave and that re-opening the wound would be a problem.

I had stitches in my head for a few days afterwards, if that tells you the size of the moles

Good luck!

Not to worry.  I've had two skin cancers removed from my skull prior to sly, and nobody has ever commented until my last trip to the skin doctor--a growth, I forget the name, has formed in the one on the front of my head, and ordinarily these growths are so non-threatening that the health insurance has to give prior approval for removal otherwise it's cosmetic work.  Anyway, since it's at the site of a former cancer, the insurance company is paying to have it removed and tested.  If it is cancerous they'll do a Moh's procedure.  Either way, I'm going to have a "bo bo" the week after next.  But my dome is so good looking anyway, no one will notice 8).

Dude, chicks DIG scars. And you can always make up a brutal story to go with them if you feel you need to. I'm proud of my scars, and like my tattoos they too tell a story.

As well as having plenty of tattoos, I also have some scars on the back of my noggin. They do indeed tell a story or two (hint: alcohol consumption ;D) and I wouldn't swap them for a smooth scarless noggin. O0
