My gym opens at 5a, and there's always a line of people!  One guy arrives having done his run--3m!  It's a great way to start the day once you get over the shock of seeing the world before dawn.

I go to the gym late at night.. work shift and sometimes pass the gym at 05:30AM on my way home after night shift .. the treadmills along the windows are always full with keen people working out.. I am only thinking about home and sleep.. ! Perhaps in summer, nae to winter.

As for protein, I use the WalMart Body Fortress Protein.  Two scoops gives me 50g protein per serving and an adequate portion of creatine.  To me protein is protein and I'm not paying tripple the price for the hottest item advertised in this months M&F, that just so happens to advertise I'll gain 10lbs of muscle in one month.  For me it comes down to finding something that tasts good to you and doesn't upset your stomach.  I started using the Body Fortress because we sell it at my pharmacy and I can get it at cost.  It works for me so I have never used anything else.  I mix two scoops with a cup of milk, one-third frozen banana, three cubes of ice, and tbsp of ice cream.  Provides a hard-gainer like me 500 calories and tastes pretty darn good.

I just started running again.  I am trying to get to the point I can run 3 miles no problem like when I was in the military.  I ran a mile and a half and was pretty winded, so I think I've got a while before I hit that 3 mile mark again.

I like running before work (0530!  It's great to run in the morning.. weather is cool enough and no one can see you gasping for air and sweating like a stuck pig!).

For me, I noticed that once I managed to consistently hit around the 3 mile mark I no longer got winded no matter how far I run.  I think you achieve a natural balance between oxygen expenditure and absorption that it no longer is an issue.  That said, once you hit longer runs other parts of your body will start complaining from the abuse.  I've found that once I go further than 10 miles, the wear and tear on the knees hits the point where I feel like the running is doing more harm than good.  You also consume so many calories that you get really hungry and I think at that point your body starts breaking down muscle tissue for energy.  Also, running 7, 8, 10 miles takes a long time and boredom sets in.

Running in the morning is the worst.

The only way I could work out at 5:30am is if I was still up from the night before.  I'd be awful enough getting up that early in the...um... late night, but to go from groggy to an intense workout?  Ain't gonna happen.

And what's the deal with people running in the morning sometimes before the sun is even up?  I live in Florida so I know hot and humid.  I've even done my 4 mile circuit numerous times in 90ยบ heat of the early afternoon, it's not optimal but I've done it.  Usually I head out in the evening a few hours before sunset when the sun's no longer intense and the temp's dropped.  Why ruin a perfectly good night of sleep when you can get the same effect later in the day and perform your run after your body has been loosened up and warmed up?

I like an early morning workout - weights, running, eliptical (sp) - it just gets the day started right.

There are morning people and evening people--I'm totally morning.  As Sooner says, a morning workout sets you up for the day.  But, if your clock doesn't tick until after high noon, do what you have to do.
While the evening people are working out, sweating in the heat, fighting the crowds,  the morning people may decide to have a cool one, poolside.  It's one of the benefits--and IMO better than coffee by the pool in the morning, and I can do that after showering and shaving anyway! O:O

I just recently started using whey as a protein shake.  Pretty good stuff.  Do  you know of any side effects?

I wouldn't say there are any negative side effects. Whey protein has some lactose in it, so severe lactose intolerant people should opt for a different protein source. With that being said, whey protein is incredibly cheap, effective and safe to use.

If you invest in a 5lber of WPC ( whey protein concetrate ) you generally run into some sort of gi distress and the and the main reason is the fact of what rwaid said is the the lactose/filler content. Im not an avid fan for that reason, do yourself a favor and if your serious about a good whey check out WPI ( whey protein isolate ) its free of all lactose, higher BCAA ( brach chain amino acids, the bodybuilding block off all muscles ) the other really popular one and its good as well is optimum nutrition whey and you can get it at any vitaminshoppe or gnc. I order all my stuff threw bodybuilding.com
