Trying to Join the Military

 Hey SlyBros..I'm fairly new to the site but loving it already. Um I'm trying to get into the military but I have like 2 or 3 misdemeanors in my past from some college misbehaving. This was back when i was like 20 and now I'm 28. What you think my chances are for getting to enlist??

Welcome Sandman.  Enlistment will most likely depend on the types of misdemeanors and the job you hope to do in the military.   If a security clearance is required for any portion of your job, the offenses could play a part in rejection.   You best bet is to ask a local recruiter, they can give you a heads up on what will fly and what won't.

I agree with Paul. Its more about which service and what job you want. If it doesn't matter to you I'm sure they'll take you no questions asked.

Im retired Army intel  and all comments are correct.  However, Im still trying to obtain answers on how the racist socialist in the White Office got access to classified information.  If he enlisted, he would have FAILED the National Agency Check(NAC). You cant have ongoing relationships with domestic terrorists like Ayers and have a security clearance in the military.  However lots of double standards for liberals...Obama also would fail the employment check for my police department.   Says alot about his character, doesnt it?  The defense and state secrets being leaked by liberals, and the lack of prosecution of the people doing it, is frightening.  No one seems to care when a lib hurts our defense or our Soldiers.

The answer to your question is that it depends on what you are applying to do and your actual past record. Your character is still light years in front of your presidents and his connection to Chicago housing crime and the Weather Underground.

On the original question, check with your recruiter.  If you don't totally trust him/her (and I don't know a recruiter that I would trust), you might try getting on the phone and calling another recruiter. The key with your recruiter is your social Security number.  Once he's done a reverse identity theft and turned in your name and social, he will get credit for you and a second recruiter can't "steal you away" from the first one.  To them it's all about points / credit and numbers.

Sandmano4, so which service are you trying to get into?  My guess is that the Air Force is probably the most picky about your past, and the Army may be the least (comparitively).  It still comes down to supply and demand.  If an Army recruiter is having a bad month, he might go the extra mile and try to get a waiver approved for you, if your background is a bit spotty.

Actually I'm trying for the Marines. That branch is a bit intimidating to me, but at the same time I really admire their professionalism. I'm trying to see If I can get in there first.. As far as my high crimes : I had two marijuana posession charges. One was for a joint in my shirt, other was for something pretty much the same : both class D's. Other than that I got caught with a fake ID at a liquor store. As far as MOS's Im pretty much willing to do whatever they tell me workwise ( a good trait I guess if want a job ) I appreciate the input brothers.

I was told by my recruiter that there is a "waiver for everything."  Now whether or not that's true, or if it even applies these days I am not certain; however, I am sure your recruiter will make it happen if he can.

What will NOT get you in (well will get you kicked out at least) is smoking weed before going in.  If you smoke a joint a week before boot, they will find out and you will be kicked out.  The Marine Corps isn't as strict (from what I understand at least... I never had a problem getting in) as the air force when it comes to prior offenses.  The Marines weed their non-hackers out in boot (you will see).  Don't be a dummy and not tell them everything and then get thrown out of your platoon because they found out you didn't tell them everything.  Be honest and bring EVERYTHING to the table at your recruiters office.  He'll write all the crap down and see if he can get you in.

I hope you make it, man.  If you make it to boot, that's great but then you have 3 months of boot to get through, good luck!

You need to ask these questions to a Marine recruiter, be up front and be honest with him/her. Im gonna say that the misdemeanors from eight years ago will not require you to get any sort of moral waiver, the Marine Corps recruiting command doesnt like to give waivers of any kind and even with what is going on today in the world we will not compromise in anyway. They will do a background check and if you are cleared you're good to go. As for as jobs ( MOS ) that all depends on your asvab score, regardless you'll give something to the Corps.....chew some dirt and join the Grunts.

Take the best of all these posts and do your research...you'll get in...its up to you to pick exactly what you want to do, so make sure you go into your recruiter's office prepared.  And if they don't have it, as exactly what it takes to get what you want...you probably won't be far away from it anyway and they will work with you to get you qualified.

  Hey Guys, Sandmano4 again... I just wanted to thank everyone for their encouragement and input. Im schedualed for boot camp Nov 2, meaning about 6 weeks!
Wish me luck.. I'll probably need it.. Going from civilian life to the marines will be a shell shocker for me, but it doesn't mean Im not excited as heck, any tips on how to survive bootcamp??>> greatly appreciated thanks!
