Hey Fellas,
Just want to apologize for my absence, life’s been a little on the busy side. So this is my first real post in a while. So now on with the meat and potatoes of my post…..
I am going to switch Operating Systems, going to switch from Windows XP to Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty Gibbon… Now this is my first venture into the Linux world, actually would be my first non Windows OS.
So my question is, any advice?
What should I research now?
Any commands I need to know?
What are you Ubuntu opinions?
Help a Windows XP geek out.

I would look into your basic commands as they are similar, but different to working with DOS commands. For example, to do an IPCONFIG in Windows is an IFCONFIG in Linux. I know there's a GUI to use that will allow you to do most of the functions without needing to know commands, but they will come in handy.

Hi frosti,
Yeh, I'm seriously tempted to switch too. I have a good friend who uses Gutsy Gibbon, has just upgraded from Feisty Fawn & GG looks really good. If you've got a 3D graphics card the compiz- fusion effects (which come as part of gutsy gibbon) are really impressive from what I've seen. Anyway, my friend was a complete novice himself until recently but has managed to get everything up & running okay by researching here :
http://www.ubuntu.com/He also recommends the forums here :
http://ubuntuforums.org/Hope that helps some.
Oh yes, also mentioned that if you use wi-fi you might have a problem but otherwise should be okay.
Hope that helps some. Good luck & let us know how you get on.

I'm another one think about switching over to a different OS. I alway have problems with WinXP and I'm getting tired of fixing them. About 2 months ago I had a problem with Registry Editor after installing one of Microsoft updates. Many of the Registry files got deleted with the update, so i goto support and find out that you now have to pay to get help from support, which pissed me off
since it use to be free. Now I'm on the search as well for a new OS as well...

I've never had that problem, I'm thinking it could be a codec problem?

Video card drivers? You could also try other flavors of linux, like red hat fedora. Just boot with the live cd first to test drive it. Sabayon is good too

Did you install the packages for video play? Totem should install the codecs for you automatically.
