Just bought some new tools
« on: October 05, 2012, 05:41:29 PM »
So I was in the store today and I came across I an old style shave set with a mug and a brush and some old style lather. I'm really excited to use these tommrorw. But I have never used one. So any advice on how to most effectively use these tools? And will they help me get a closer shave? Thanks guys

I use none of them, but I'm glad you've achieved them.

So you have the soap, brush and mug...here's a video that will take you through the whole process.

Prepare your face/head with a hot wash, pre-shave or oil...how ever you are doing it and brush on the lather, working it around then have at it. Before you know it you'll have a head slick as a jar full of eels. Good luck!

Another oddly effective way to lather your face is thusly:

Take the soap out of the mug.
Fill the mug with hot water and let the brush soak in the mug.
Rub the soap on your face or head. The whiskers or hair seem to pick up the correct amount of soap.
Hold the brush bristles down and give a light shake. Gravity will remove the right amount of water.
Rub the brush in a circular motion over the soap to build and distribute it on your head and or face.

You should get a quick easy and good lather.

Give it a try.

Post up a picture of the razor, brush and soap.  Also, what kind of blades will you use?

I would suggest taking a look on YouTube for the videos of Mantic59 and Geofatboy.  They both have videos showing from the very basics of making larger and DE shaving.

Give it time though, even if first shaves aren't great. It's a skill to be learned and can take time.  Do not press hard with the razor.  Start with only really the weight of the razor keeping it against your face. Those blades are sharp!
