How Did "Sly" Come to Mean Shaved Clean?
« on: August 25, 2010, 08:18:33 PM »
Question. When did "sly" become a synonym for shaving your head clean? Is there a story there? Being a Firefly fan, I equate sly with gay. Not that there's anything wrong with that, just...how did it come to mean shaved clean?

Not sure, but it could mean we slyly beat baldness.

the Present worse than it is & the future less resolved than it will be.

I think when Tyler created this forum would be the correct answer. If he had named it the Macho Bald Guys Forum then Macho would be the synonym for shaving your head clean. :)
I personally prefer Sly over Macho, but you can be both Sly and Macho.

Now that I've thought about it, it's probably just because it rhymes with "guy."

The answer is out there...

But to save you time, I'll answer it here.

When I created the site, I was looking for an adjective to put in-front of "Bald Guys" that made us stand out.  I liked the meaning of "sly" being that we "are wise in practical affairs," "clever," and "roguish."
People are not limited by the circumstance that they are born in. They are limited by the size of their dreams. Show them that their dreams can have no limits and in turn their accomplishments can be limitless.

waitaminujte... so other people browsing the web might interpret this site as:
"gay bald guys" ???   lol!

I thought the term had been around longer ..

I thought it was maybe a cross between slick and guy..  as in slick-headed guy.
Sledhead?
Hair today.. gone tomorrow!  (sorry)

Only if you're a die-hard Firefly/Serenity fan.  I was tired, my brain went off on a weird track.  Happens.

I reread this post 2 times and can't find any reference to a complement aimed towards gay guys being sly.
Not to say that they arent, but we are all sly here.

KevoBX, you're a very very sly man.  If I were gay, I would stalk you.
