Welcome Mike,
In the beginning you want to be extra careful. Go slowly and apply less pressure. As time goes on you'll get a better feel for it.
On cuts, I do a cold rinse or ice to slow the bleeding, I use a styptic pencil (corner pharmacy will have it) then after that regularly apply neosporin/triple antibiotic and keep the area lotioned to heal up quicker.
The head has alot of capillaries and blood flow going through it. That means when you break the surface it's a gusher. But on the other hand, that also means that stuff heals up quicker. For most basic cuts, I avoid the area the next day, then handle with care the next day. By the end of the week it's just a little pink spot.
